This company just bet $288,000,000.00 on an Obama victory

September 21, 2012 – Comments (5) | RELATED TICKERS: SCMR

Daniel Smith is the CEO of Sycamore Networks.  He has approximately 1.65 million shares of his own company.  Recently SCMR announced the special dividend of $10/share payable in October of this year.  Notice this is right before a likely Obama victory and therefore the prospect of a raise on all dividend taxes.  In total the 28.8 million shares outstanding will total a $288 million payout.  This from a company with a market cap of approximately $455 million.  Now this might not be politically motivated and I could be all wrong.  However, if I'm right, I think many other CEO's need to examine the possibility of special dividends since this 15% rate might be at risk.  Daniel is not only looking out for himself but in turn looking out for his shareholders.  [more]

The "what if?" game

September 21, 2012 – Comments (7)

What if the normal end to this bullish business cycle, which we've been in since march 2009, ends right on schedule (averages considered) in 2014/15.  What if 2014/15 is when we start seeing this inflation we all know is on the horizon?  Could this produce a stagnant economy or even depressed economy amidst the backdrop of near hyper-inflationary levels?  Oh darn, I just scared the crap outta myself.  I don't wanna think about that.  But apparently not too many other people do either since I haven't really heard that possibility discussed much.  Just had to put that out there since it's on my mind.  Thanks all :D  [more]

Be careful which Fools you trust

September 19, 2012 – Comments (36)

Yesterday I was looking around for some good long ideas by scouting many of the top players to see what they are doing.  However, long ideas were few and far between among the higher rated players.  There were a few high score players with a history of going long, don't get me wrong.  But it seems that many of these other players have taken the easy route to a 99 rating by shorting the ultra shorts which over time is bound to be a winner.  But this is not realistic for obvious reasons.  So my point is that while you may see a 99 going long on a stock it might be a good idea to see if he's earned that score from going long other stocks or simply shorting their way to the top.  A high score on this game doesn't always translate into a good long term investor, in fact, it may be the exact opposite.  [more]

Follow up to "Instant Inflation"

September 18, 2012 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: GLD , ABX , GG

You will lose out on some very predictable returns in the gold market if you don't get involved.  On August 14th I published an article here on The Motley Fool stating my intentions to buy gold miners.  I noted that while gold had remained even on the year the miners were down some 20% in many cases.  Here is the link to Instant Inflation.  Since that time we have seen some great returns based on the speculation of how QE3 will now effect the economy.  However, gold itself has still yet to make any big moves.  While I cited QE as one catalyst for higher gold prices it wasn't my only reason.  I still believe my thesis is intact and will play out over the coming years.  This is just a heads up to all you fools out there that the gold boat hasn't sailed yet.  Though it's at the docks and people are boarding.  Maybe you might wanna go for this cruise?  Gold to $2,500 by the fall of 2014.  What do you all think?  [more]

I went through the blogs home page this morning and found tons and tons of articles about dividend payers.  I object to all this dividend talk.  [more]
