Need proof that the credit markets are thawing? Look at SiriusXM.

June 27, 2009 – Comments (3)

On Thursday, Sirius XM had a debt auction, selling four-year senior secured notes of a total of $525.8 million with strong investor demand. This led to Sirius rising from $.35 to $.45 in one day (though on Friday the Russell 2000 reshuffling led to a large sell-off of Siri in the last 5 seconds of trading. The stock now trades at somewhere between $.35-.45 depending on what the last 5 seconds of trading and afterhours)  [more]

CAPS Feature idea: changing blog recs to a scale of 1-5

June 18, 2009 – Comments (7)

If you go on and look at a book review, books are rated from 1 star to 5 stars, with an additional notice of "was this review helpful to you?".  Such a system might really help improve the CAPS blogs and weed out some of the negative attacks that get high rec scores.  The current system of blogs highlights posters that make extreme claims or have highly dramatic attacks on other posters.  Neither of these types of posters is conducive to a positive atmosphere in the blogs nor helpful to less experienced bloggers.  Less experienced bloggers might look at a posting saying the market is going to 14000!!! or DOW going to 3000!!! with 30 recs and think, wow - that guy must be on to something.  In the current investing atmosphere, that is very dangerous for new investors without much background to be able to filter out wild posters.  [more]

Why I am still invested in Sirius XM.

June 17, 2009 – Comments (4) | RELATED TICKERS: SIRI

Yesterday it was announced that XM radios will now be standard on Toyota Camry, which may result in tens of thousands of new subscriptions (with a million new vehicles coming out a year).  Further, it appears that an iPhone application will arriving soon - with the rumor being that tommorrow may be the release date in the apple apps store.  Both of these moves will open up SiriusXM for a large group of new possible subscriptions.    [more]

What's the problem with the T-bonds?

June 11, 2009 – Comments (6)

I've seen a lot of posts lately that the stock market is now going to crash because of the treasury bond market in the United States.  These posts have been about how T-bonds (10 and 30 year) have yields that are rising quickly and that this is a sign that other countries are giving up on the dollar or the United States as a safe debtor country.    [more]

CAPS feature request: grouping picks by sectors / descriptions

June 09, 2009 – Comments (7)

When I look at my CAPS page  which currently has 75 picks, I have to remember what each company's ticker symbol stands for, remember what field each company is in, and remember why I picked the company originally.  With 75 or fewer picks, I can usually keep a good track of this, although occasionally I will see my CAPS page and think - why the heck did I choose THAT GUY?!?    [more]

Anyone here subscribe to newspapers? What do you subscribe?

June 04, 2009 – Comments (7) | RELATED TICKERS: NYT

Lately I've been growing tired of getting all my news from internet sources, and have been thinking again about subscribing to a major newspaper.  My favorite newspaper read is the New York Times, though sometimes I read the Wall Street Journal.  Weekends, I love Barron's - but I rarely buy it - just browse it at the library.  [more]

Stability returning.. really?

June 03, 2009 – Comments (0)

 - In the last month banks have raised nearly $85 billion through the public markets (WSJ) So we went from Jan/Feb the possibility of nationization of the banking system, to limited government aid and banks raising their own capital to stay afloat.  That's pretty good.  [more]

Adding some new positions today.

June 01, 2009 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: OTTR , GILD , AA

I know the market indices are at a 7 month high point.  That's fine, but not all stocks have risen with the tide.  I decided that I'm interested in putting my money into some more good companies today.  Namely, into business trends that I think will do well in the long term as well as some short term plays.  [more]
