Although I am retired, I regularly appear in the annual Barron's roundtable forum. My track record is impressive, of the 31 years that I managed a fund, I beat the S&P 500 22 times, with a CAGR of 14.8% a year. While I am not widely known to the public, I have a reputation in the industry as a "professional's professional", as money would be safe in my hands, through bull & bear cycles. My investing style is that of a "Low P/E" investor, and I like stocks that pay an above average dividend. In fact I came up with a screening formula similar to an inverse P/E/G with the added component of a Dividend yield. I advocate scanning the new 52 week lows for good quality companies temporarily over-sold on bad news. [more]

On a daily basis, I like to check out new 52-week lows, as well as same-day largest percentage losers. On a regular basis, I like to find out what others are buying / recommending. I am keenly aware that a stock's share price is affected by news, comments or recommendations, so I rarely buy on news or rumors, instead I like to watch the stock until it is off the radar screen (so to speak). February 23, 2007 –
Since I started Investing in Oct 2003, I have probably made more investment mistakes than most, here are my more memorable losers and the lesson learnt. By "losers", I mean most of them returned -50% and some were spectacular 80% losses. Thankfully I have had more winners than losers. But as Ben Stein's Mom would say, "We do the best we can, and when we make a mistake, we don't cry about it. Don't worry, you'll do it again." [more]

With TMF1000's permission, I am including a valuable lesson on how to invest large amounts of money on smaller capitalised stocks. The original post came from a reponse TMF1000 gave to an investor in Hidden Gems who lost money after investing large amounts in 11 stocks in HG. [more]

Morningstar (MORN), best known for its ratings of Mutual Funds, Stocks, ETFs and Hedge Funds, files a monthly8-K document on Q&A on its business, prospects and other tidbits one don't normally find in the 10-Q. I gleaned through the past 12 months, and I am pasting down some of the more salient questions and answers. Hi, this is my watchlist. I try to build my circle of competence around this watchlist, I read up what I can about these companies and try to do some valuation. THe WTBuyPx refers to the ideal price I would like to buy the stock at, of course it helps to curb my enthusiasm but I do have lapses, I mean, I was so convinced that WU was a steal that I bought at 19, 23 and 22, even when I had the WTBuyPx at 19. I am about 30% in cash and short-term (<60 days) merger arbitrage position in Giant Industries (GI). The cash position has shrunk from about 40% since the beginning of the year as I have added onto and initiated several positions while paring some old positions like PFE(broke even) and FNM (+18%), bringing my portfolio to a current stable of about 18 stocks. Yup. CEO of Citigroup is a director of JNJ. While he chooses to nibble at his own company stock C, he has been buying chunks of JNJ.
