Difficult to click the underperform button...

March 28, 2009 – Comments (2)

It is probably just my novice knowledge level, but I find it difficult to select a company to underperform.  With the world being beat down as far as it is, economically speaking, I find myself having to dig through many, many, many good companies and CAPs recommendations that boil down to trying to select the better or best winner among many winners.  Honestly, with the vast majority of companies and sectors in the market pummeled to rock bottom pricing, how does one fail to choose a winner? Or more correctly, what do you watch for to prevent picking the one or two losers that may still be out there.  [more]

The sweet allure of margin trading...

March 22, 2009 – Comments (8) | RELATED TICKERS: BIDU , ZINCQ

Have I mentioned that I am a novice trader?  Probably more than once.  My expert investing brother mentioned margin trading to me once as a means to obtain some capital when I was strapped.  He mentioned that it is a double edged sword though.  He had said that one can easily double up on profits using another person's money (which is essentially what trading using a margin is), but that you could just as easily lose everything the same way.  Believe it or not, I think I found a third edge to this sword.  [more]

I spoke with my Mom this weekend.  No, that is not what is amazing.  What is amazing is the fact that she felt it news worthy that the market had a string of four days of gains.  She said the media coverage in LA where she lives talked the "rally" up as if the end of the economic troubles was in sight.  I told her to not put a lot of stock in that assessment.  Given that the market is off by more than 50% from its highs, four days of gains that total less than 700 points, while noteworthy, does not mean the economy is going to fix itself.  [more]

Insanity seems to continue...

Admittedly, I am at best a rookie with a little bit of experience (albeit negative experience from the gain/loss perspective) in the market world.  I am a military man by trade, an engineer and computer geek by education, and curious fellow over all.  What I can not seem to get past is how the market continues to jump or more correctly fly down the hill every time someone makes mention of something negative.  Yes, the global economy pretty much s _ _ ks right now and there is no real end in sight, but I can't help but think that a lot of this is part of some kind of self-fulfilling prophecy.  Everyone keeps shouting about how the sky is falling...and look the sky falls.  I wonder if perhaps we started seeing more positive stories in the media, if things might turn around a little more quickly.  [more]

New to this whole thing...

I have been "playing" in the market for almost fifteen years.  It is an on-again, off-again, game for me.  Two years ago, before the housing bubble burst, I decided to try my hand at trading.  To my great chagrin, my timing pretty much s _ _ ked.  In the span of two years, almost to the day, I lost 30 grand "playing" the market.  [more]
