Drilling Ban may be lifted a Month Early

September 30, 2010 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: DO , SLB , RIG

Lifting of Drilling ban a month early should cause Massive short squeeze of historic porportion because when the drilling ban was put in effect it gave the green light to hedge funds to short drillers without any risk by doing so. It created a herd mentality of shorting at will. It caused just about every driller to come crashing down and majority are still trading near the 52wk lows. Some drillers are trading at PE's in single digits, prior to ban on drilling many drillers had PE's in the 20's on average and some even traded with PE's in the 30's or higher.  So you can imagine what will happen if the hedge funds wait to cover until the ban is lifted a month early catching them by surprise : "A Massive short Squeeze of historic proportion".  Problem is these hedge funds are smart money and they are not waiting until the ban is lifted on them by Surprise, they have already started covering as can be witnessed from the price movements of drillers this week, notably DO,SLB,RIG, others too have started to move. Now is the time to search for drillers that have not moved as much yet and still trading in single digit PE's. Waiting till the news comes out will cause you to miss out on vast majority of gains, plus will you be there to buy on the dime right before the spike on the news? Most probably not..

44 pounds of Rare Earth needed per Toyota Prius

September 28, 2010 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: MCP , REE , LYSCF

The most important use for rare earth elements is in hybrid and alternate fuel vehicles. The powerful, efficient motors and the high-capacity batteries needed in these vehicles are driving demand for these minerals.

"In a Toyota Prius, for example, there's over 20 kilograms of rare earth,"

"Now you've got cars like Lexus coming out with three electric motors in them. There's a lot of rare earth demand building up in the hybrid vehicle market."

"The uses seem to be expanding almost exponentially every year. The hybrid vehicle industry really drives it, but the uses are just staggering. That's part of the problem--to decide what product you want to produce and which market you want to address."

CLW's Shocking good increase in Free Cash Flow $21.96/shr

September 23, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: CLW

The Company has a fiscal year ending December and recently reported its 2Q10 results. For the quarter, net earnings were $20.6 million, or $1.75 per diluted share, compared with net earnings of $75.4 million, or $6.43 per diluted share for 2Q09. The prior year results included special items totaling $4.60 per share for alternative fuel mixture tax credits, renewable energy tax credits and debt retirement costs. Excluding those items, 2Q09 diluted earnings were $1.83 per share.

For FY09, net income was $182.5 million, or $15.50 per diluted share. This compares with net income of $114.5 million, or $9.72 per diluted share for the twelve month period ending June 2010.

Net sales for 2Q10 were $343.86 million, 8.5% higher than 2Q09 sales of $316.91million. Operating income was lower due to higher raw material costs. Net sales in FY09 totaled $1,250.1 million compared to $1,320.9 million for the trailing twelve months ending June 2010.

Free cash flow is considered by many a superior measure to earnings. For FY09, Clearwater reported free cash flow of $17.45 per share. For the trailing twelve months ending June 2010, free cash increased to $21.96 per share.

Clearwater has a very solid balance sheet. As of 2Q10, the Company reported cash and short term investments of $333.0 million and long term debt of $148.4 million. Cash and short term investments represent about 40% of the recent stock price. Clearwater does not report any goodwill or other intangibles on its balance sheet, making the Price/TBV ratio 2.11.

The Company is both profitable and efficient. Return on Equity is 31.6% as compared to the industry median of 11.2%. Similarly, return on assets at 12.2% compares very favorably with the industry median of 2.6%.

Clearwater has long term debt of $148.4 million, as of June 2010. The long term debt to capital ratio is 27.3% and long term debt to equity is 37.6%, as compared to the industry medians of 35.8% and 60.8%, respectively.   [more]

September 14, 2010 – Comments (0) | RELATED TICKERS: DGIT

As glum as CEO Ginsburg likely is about Aug. 30th sell-off, there is a slight bright side to the share price action: That $30 million buyback is going to go a lot further now.

Oppenheimer's Helfstein was cheered a bit by the buyback, and said possible positive catalysts for the stock from here could include any comments at upcoming Fall investor conferences about ad trends for the fourth quarter, and the beginning of the political spending season.

Oppenheimer & Co. analyst Jason Helfstein, who has an outperform rating on the stock, noted that the company's full-year outlook for EBITDA [earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization] of $105 million to $107 million on revenue of between $230 million to $234 million doesn't look so bad when compared to what he was forecasting prior to the second-quarter report.

"Based on our estimates prior to better 2Q results, revised revenue guidance is in line, and EBITDA is 5% ahead," he said in a note.

DGFastChannel attributed the view for third quarter, where it now expects to report revenue of $51 million to $53 million vs. the current Wall Street consensus view of $61 million, to normal seasonality, which it said was masked a bit by the strong second quarter, as well as short-term pressures from the transition of its Pathfire syndication business to a retail model from wholesale. Oppenheimer's Helfstein said this switch should be beneficial in the long run.  [more]

Ban of Incandescence bulbs fast Approaching

September 01, 2010 – Comments (5) | RELATED TICKERS: MCP , GE , F

Incandescence bulbs waste 95% of their energy and convert only 5% to actual light. Contrast this to the CFL which converts 25% of input energy to visible light via the Rare Earth phosphor coating. This efficiency results in much lower lamp temperatures, significantly longer life (estimated at 6 to 10 times as long), and less total energy consumed, directly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

ENERGYSTAR reports that if every home in America replaced just one incandescent light bulb with a qualified CFL then in one year that action would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes. This would prevent the release of greenhouse gas emissions equal to that of about 800,000 cars.

Countries around the globe are mandating the phase out of incandescent bulbs. Australia led the way by announcing all bulbs must be replaced with CFLs by 2010. The U.S. passed an energy bill that bans incandescent bulbs by 2014.

It is estimated that Rare Earth consumption in this application is growing about 15-20% per year meaning additional supply will be necessary to support this growth.

More information can be found on the ENERGYSTAR website a  [more]
