Diversify, diversify, diversify.

November 28, 2008 – Comments (7)

We diversify to reduce risk. If XOM goes under we also own BP, so we do not lose everything. If oil stops being used we also own BBBB and ISRG so once again we do not lose everything. The price of diversity is the great home run gain. We give up the possibility of having everything we saved loaded into XOM when it doubles for instant riches. Many of us are willing to take such risk, others are not. If you are young you may be more inclined to risk it all and swing for the fences. As you age you take less risk because you have less time to recover if you strike out. Or you become desperate and increase you risk. But in truth, this is only money. If you lose every penny you just keep working.  [more]

Smart, Dumb, and Lucky.

According to CAPS players (Smart?), an investment in 2 star Citibank would be dumb (Dumb?), and you would have to be lucky (Lucky) to realize a positive return.  [more]

Look out Below

November 20, 2008 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: SKF , SRS , SMN

SKF has doubled in two weeks with huge moves upward on 60% higher than normal volume yesterday and today.

SKF is not attractive to long term buy and hold kind of investers.

I would not want to be the second person trying to get off that meteoric ride.

Devoish,

No position in SKF, red thumbed SKF in caps.

Will it make tomorrows worst top five list?

A couple more thoughts on the GM, Ford and Chrysler bailout.

November 19, 2008 – Comments (3) | RELATED TICKERS: F , GM , TM

As I listen to our representatives ask questions of the "big three" executives I hear them getting the executives to make promises in how they will spend the money. "You must build hybrids" - "already done" say the execs.  "You must build cars people want to buy" - "already done" say the execs. "You must give us oversight so we know you spend the money in the USA" - "ok" say the execs. And on it goes.   [more]

Investing in Crap.- Part Three.

November 04, 2008 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: EPG

Kind of like farting in a crowded room, a while ago I shared my adventures in poop with all of you when I told you about my investment in crap (EPG). After bailing out of the poop with a small profit, I decided to jump back into the vile pile. As the price of gas fell, so fell the value of excrement. I watched it slop downward from the bottom, toward the bottom. With each excremental dropping I became more relieved. As we all should know from personal observation, poop sinks to the bottom first and true to form EPG clumped on the floor as the market followed it down. I slipped back in a little ways at $3.00, then dripped and dropped in a little more each time it slipped lower. Unfortunately my little poop pile collapsed with the market, sinking lower and lower as it spread out searching for the lowest floor. I am now under.....water. But I am not flushing. I have come to believe in crap investing. And  this pile of crap is as likely to run as any. I believe more people will someday want to own crap. In fact the US Gov has recently updated the CAFO permitting process. CAFO stand for Concentrated Animal Feedlot Operations, or as I refer to them Free Poop Factorys. It has become required that your Poop Processing Plan be approved along with your Poop Producing Permit. In other words if you want to spew immense amounts of crap you have to be able to handle your immense crap (please refer to the Political Asylum board). And since EPG turns a Poop disposal expense into a processed poop profit for the CAFO this can only be hot stuff for EPG.  [more]
