An Easy way to add Stocks to your CAPS portfolios or Do Status Checks

February 26, 2009 – Comments (4)

This is an easy way to add the stocks you want to your CAPS portfolios.  It will not ask if you are certain that you want to do this.  It will speed the process if you get tired of going through the extra windows to confirm your actions.  It also eliminates the need for going to your CAPS page in between each choice.  It also works well for ending picks as well as adding them.  There is also a way to use this to check the status of your CAPS portfolio easily. (second procedure - below the first.)    [more]

It's how you play the game

February 24, 2009 – Comments (10)

There is a certain amount of insanity to what I am about to explain.  That means it fits right in with the stock market at the moment.  CAPS, the game, is intended to mirror the stock market. So how do we go about getting the ratings or rankings, the funny little hats?  Now at the moment, the colors are bleeding out of my little hat, so I had to figure out a way to brighten it up.  I have run this by a friend who has a much  colorful little hat than mine (and manages to keep it that way).  Now setting aside the fact that this friend is also brighter and studies the actual companies, he seems to think this might work.  Since I am all for avoiding Hard Work *shudder* at all costs, here is what I have come up with.    [more]

Travel plans to Mexico? Precautions or Informed travel may be Advised

February 23, 2009 – Comments (5)

The following information came to me as part of an email from a friend today.  It deals with a change in personal safety issues while traveling in Mexico, so I am passing along the portions that seem most relevant.  Consider checking with the State Department and other appropriate agencies for up-to-date information before traveling.  [more]

One of My Favorite CAPS Members - An Introduction to Dividends4Life

February 21, 2009 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: KO

After this last week, you may be looking for a safe haven for investing.  I have been reading the blogs of Dividends4Life for quite some time.  I would like to recommend that you check his information for yourself.  He has good reasons for his suggestions, keeps up with the market prices so that he knows when there is a particularly good value available, and provides disclosure as to which stocks he owns himself.  In addition, Dividends4Life has a Stock Ideas page that gives a running account of the companies that he is tracking.  This last is something that I have just learned and plan to make use of in the future.  [more]

February 20, 2009 – Comments (18)

Today is the end of options week.  I expected to be buying today in anticipation of at least some run-up because of this.  I frequently read blogs but bypass links.  Today, reading a post by GoldminingExpert, I broke with that and started reading through the links.  I found one that shook me.  If you are planning to do swing trading or day trading, this may not apply.  If you are doing options, shorting the market, all of those things that I shy away from, probably you can take this with a grain of salt.  I am one that does a lot more of the 'buy and hold', 'dividend investment', 'get the best price you can' kind of investing.  If I can get a great price, the dividend is a greater return.  For an investor like me, this is a major piece of information.   [more]

Stock Markets Falling, but it's not Doomsday Quite Yet!!

February 18, 2009 – Comments (11)

Have you read the blogs concerned about our economy, our nation? Have you reached a point that being fiscally responsible seems to be punished and you expect now that “No good deed ever goes unpunished?” Are you aware by now that the way to benefit from the stimulus plan is to spend lots of money, whether you have it or not? And if you don’t have the money, sorry, you can’t play with the big kids!  [more]

Tax Opportunities - How will the $787 billion stimulus package affect you?

February 18, 2009 – Comments (11)

First, this is a long post and I know it. If the tax breaks pertain to you, you will know it within the first part of the post. If one tax break or provision applies, I have organized this so that you can find just the one that you want and skip the rest. There are enough of us at CAPS that I am figuring that every one of these provisions pertains to a bunch of us. Please leave enough recs to get this over to the side so that it can be found later in the day by other caps members. Thanks. I hope your day is a good one!  [more]

DON'T LOOK ETHYL!!!!!! but it was too late ---

February 18, 2009 – Comments (0)

TMFJalke asked for predictions on the market yesterday.  My response included "Don't look, Ethyl!"  a phrase familiar to one  particular group of CAPS members.  For them and for those who need some idea of alternatives to tax-and-spend economic-induced considerations of revolution, I offer a different type of movement.  A different type of reaction to a situation that may seem too much to handle.  It  May be your parents reaction.  Baby Boomers Unite  and be ready to sing when it comes back around!!  [more]

Personal and Public Responsiblility

February 17, 2009 – Comments (3)

I am too 'soft' to be a bill collector.  I learned this when applying for a job some years ago.  The fact that I could state that I ABSOLUTELY would Not throw a single mom with kids out of her home on Christmas Eve (yep, that was the question and answer), meant that I would have to be considered for customer service,  credit verification, or some other area.  Just Not Tough Enough.  I will take that valuation quite happily.  With that said -  [more]

The Pax Clean Energy Tennis Tournament - A Review in Progress

February 13, 2009 – Comments (12)

Pax Clean Energy as a stock is a joke.  I understand this.  I do.  I also understand that I have lost 110 points by tagging it as an underperform.  I am not alone in this.  Finally, I bit the bullet, cut my losses, and closed out the pick.  I chose the stock to outperform.  It immediately began to DROP. ^#%%%&$!!!!!!!!!  The following is taken from the review of the stock as I changed from under to outperform, and then watched the stock act with all the backbone of Jello on a hot summer day.  [more]

Oce NV - Confusion Reigns! Does Anybody Use This Company?

February 13, 2009 – Comments (9)

It seemed like a good idea at the time.  I chose a few little underpicked stocks just for fun; no money on them, no harm done.  Oceny is now outperforming beautifully, and there is no financial data to tell me why.  So I am turning to CAPS.  The company makes printers, copiers, scanners, etc as mentioned below (taken from their website).  I am hoping that somebody reading this uses or has used the products of this company and can give me some feedback on the products and by inference the company.  I can ignore a company that just sits and does nothing.  One that moves agressively up or down makes me curious.  One that moves up or down with no information as to why makes me nervous.  Any help out there? - And please leave a rec even if you don't know about this company.  I would like for this post to stay around long enough to be found by someone who actually does use the blasted products or can fill in the reasons for the good fortune of the company.    [more]

Am I the Only One That Would Like Subject Headings for Blogs?

February 06, 2009 – Comments (15)

The list of blogs that I am following has gone from a few to Some to YIPES!  One big reason that I click on that little Follow tab is that I see something in a blog that I know I will need later.  The chance of finding that nifty (yes, nifty) little post on dividend bearing stocks trading at bargain basement prices or the intellectual discourse that is going to take a bit more work to comprehend is absolutely zero if I don't bookmark it in the following section.  It is beginning to be a bit doubtful even if it is in that section.  [more]

The Day The Music Died - 50 Years ago Today

February 03, 2009 – Comments (2)

Today is the 50th anniversary of a plane crash near Clear Lake Iowa that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper, three of rock 'n roll's biggest  names at that time.  You may be more familiar with the names in connection to their work.  The Big Bopper (J. P. Richardson) had a hit at that particular moment called "Chantilly Lace".  The life and work of Ritchie Valens, who was only 17 at that point, has been put into a movie called "La Bamba".  Buddy Holly's life has also been put on the movie screen.  The February 3, 1959 plane crash that killed them, as well as the pilot,Roger Peterson was later called The Day the Music Died in a song written by Don McLean in a 1971 song American Pie.  [more]

Fearful and Greedy? No, Independent; and Maybe Stubborn

February 01, 2009 – Comments (34)

Drummnutt, I have been reading your blogs about the fact that we, as Americans, are so crippled with greed and fear (forgive me, I should have capitalized that and surrounded it with shudders), that we can only survive as a civilized society if we destroy all of our guns, turn most of our wages over to the federal government, and allow the government to handle all of our needs like good little children.    [more]
