The promised information on Schedule C deductions (small businesses)

March 31, 2009 – Comments (0)

Over the weekend, I fulfilled a promise to several friends who have small businesses and wanted to know where certain expenses went on the tax forms for those businesses.  Since there are a fair number who do not get to this site during the weekend, I want you to know that the resource is available if you need it.  I am not going to copy and paste because the comments are valuable.  There is good information there from others who work in this area and they should be given great attention to.  On the chance that you are in a situation that would cause you to need this information, I wanted you to know where to find it.  With that in mind, you can find answers to a great many questions at this blog -  May your refunds be beyond your wildest dreams.  [more]

Schedule C - What expenses go where for your business?

March 28, 2009 – Comments (44)

This is the promised list of where to put business expenses by category on a Schedule C for your taxes.  Hang on to it.  Print it out.  This doesn't change.  Also, lumping all of your expenses together and sticking them under misc. is possible, but it gives the IRS computer a case of heartburn.  Instead of Tums, the IRS computer could call for an auditor to chomp on the offending return.  Then you still have to break this stuff out anyway.  Comments from other tax preparers are welcomed (the 2006 tax code was the same word length as 10 king james Bibles, For one person to know all of that would be insane) - Oh, and if you are one of the ones that requested this, I hope it helps.  You know to use at your own risk (standard disclaimer, all cases different, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah, due diligence, and all that stuff)  [more]

It's all quite simple really

The community outside of CAPS is not normally concerned with economic matters.  If you choose to drag a CNBC personality like Cramer in front of Comedy Central cameras and plop him in front of Jon Stewart, they will watch.  Mostly though, they just want to ignore the whole nasty business.  In CAPS, you are supposed to act like you know what is going on and that can be a problem when you don't.  Following a link provided by a friend who shall remain nameless and thus, hopefully, unembarrassed, I found a short seminar by a couple of British financiers.  This was able to put all of the pieces together for me and explain what exactly has been going on.  I feel immensely better now that I understand it all.  As an educational service, I deem it appropriate to pass this along for others who might have had some question as to how the financial and housing sectors got into such a fix and why the government might feel a certain obligation to rescue them from themselves.  It truly is all quite simple.    [more]

Just getting a bit of maneuvering room

March 13, 2009 – Comments (7) | RELATED TICKERS: TI , ME.DL2

I kept finding myself in loooooong blogs with looooots of comments.   When the bar at the side started to move from small to tiny to microscopic, I knew I was in trouble.  Did I really want to page down for an eternity (15 or 20 seconds in computer time is an eternity) just to read the new comment or two that had been added?  [more]

This is my first attempt to bring you an article that I found interesting.  Of course, being me, I couldn't resist a few (comments).  I hope my thoughts don't spoil it for you.  I also hope my thoughts and the full listing of who wrote it, when, and where will allow me to stay within the copyright laws and the rules of this site.  I found this on the Scottrade page.  Enjoy!    [more]

I need your help. What blog has helped you most in CAPS?

March 09, 2009 – Comments (10)

I have made an error in judgement.  A few weeks ago, I realized the index that I put together for new members had been put on the home page.  "Great,"  I thought,  "I don't need to do that again, CAPS will keep it up there and new people will have access if they need it."  [more]

Investment Stocks and Ideas - Ready for analysis by Caps members please

March 01, 2009 – Comments (30)

I have put together a list of things I am looking for in stock market investments.  I also have a list of stocks that I am starting to look at, although I have not really examined them much yet.  I am putting both lists up here.  If they are good, I invite you to use them.  MUCH More important though, I am hoping that you will look with a critical eye, especially at the stocks.  If you see a problem or a particularly great stock among the group, then please let me know about it.  [more]
