Economic recovery an Illusion ?

February 28, 2010 – Comments (5)

A number of economic reports in the last few days indicate that the U.S. economy has not only not failed to recover from the recession, but continues to fall deeper into a hole. Banking, consumer confidence, employment numbers, durable goods and the housing industry - each representing a different aspect of the economy - are all sending out troubling signs. Despite the onslaught of negative data, mainstream economists continue to echo the official U.S. government view that "the recovery is still on track."  [more]

February 28, 2010 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: WPCS

Bringing the technology and resources of the future to reality takes diverse talents and capabilities. WPCS provides complete infrastructure expertise for corporate and private enterprise, energy and utility providers, healthcare organizations, educational institutions and public services organizations worldwide.      (WPCS)   While currently not a rateable security on caps, that should change over time. At a recent $3.40 per share and earnings projected at about 32 cents for the current year, the stock looks cheap. What are your thoughts on the Kondratiev Wave ?

February 25, 2010 – Comments (3)

Nikolai Kondratiev was a Russian economist and was a director for The Institute for the Study of Business Activity In 1928. He was subsequently removed from that post by Stalin and eventually executed because Stalin did not believe In his theories, and also believed that Kondratiev's economic beliefs conflicted with his own vision for the Russian economy....   TS

Kondratiev waves—also called Supercycles, surges, long waves or K-waves—are described as regular, sinusoidal-like cycles in the modern (capitalist) world economy. Averaging fifty and ranging from approximately forty to sixty years in length, the cycles consist of alternating periods between high sectoral growth and periods of relatively slow growth. Unlike the short-term business cycle which in various forms has been familiar since the nineteenth century, the long wave of this theory does not belong within current orthodox economics and is sometimes categorized as part of heterodox economics (a catch-all term for alternative ideas).  [more]

My pitch on Pennantpark

February 24, 2010 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: PNNT

I have been following this company for a little while, and I did quite a bit of research before coming to the conclusion that this Is one extremely misunderstood and undervalued stock. The chart Is basically an arrow pointing upwards, and Insiders have been snapping up shares for awhile. Also the company has been Increasing Its dividend since 2007. With a current dividend of $1.04 and a yield over 10%  this looks like a no-brainer. PennantPark Investment Corporation (Nasdaq: PNNT) is an externally managed investment company that generates both current income and capital appreciation through debt and equity investments. The company is registered as a business development company under the Investment Company Act of 1940 and is considered a regulated investment company. They invest primarily in U.S. middle-market private companies in the form of mezzanine debt, senior secured loans and equity investments. Investment Strategy— Their investment objective is to generate both current income and capital appreciation through debt and equity investments. Their portfolios will be comprised of investments in subordinated loans, referred to as mezzanine debt, and senior secured loans made to private U.S. middle market companies.
They employ a disciplined approach in selecting investments that meet value-oriented investment criteria. Their value-oriented investment philosophy focuses on preserving capital and ensuring that their investments have an appropriate return profile in relation to risk. When market conditions make it difficult for them to invest according to their criteria, they are highly selective in deploying their capital. They do not intend to pursue short-term origination targets. They believe this approach will enable them to build an attractive investment portfolio that meets their return and value criteria over the long-term.
PENNANT.......
We believe it is critical to conduct extensive due diligence on investment targets. In evaluating new investments we, through our investment adviser, conduct a rigorous due diligence process that draws from our investment adviser’s experience, industry expertise and network of contacts. Among other things, our due diligence is designed to ensure that each prospective portfolio company will be able to meet its debt service obligations
We may also invest in equity securities, such as preferred stock, common stock, warrants or options received in connection with our debt investments or through direct investments. We expect that our investments in mezzanine debt, senior secured loans and other investments will range between $10 million and $50 million each, although this investment size will vary proportionately with the size of our capital base.
While our primary focus is to generate current income and capital appreciation through debt and equity investments in thinly traded or private U.S. companies, we may invest up to 30% of the portfolio in opportunistic investments in order to seek to enhance returns to stockholders. Such investments may include investments in high-yield bonds, distressed debt, private equity, securities of public companies that are not thinly traded and securities of middle-market companies located outside of the United States. We expect that these public companies generally will issue debt securities that are non-investment grade.
These qualities give the PennantPark an advantage over other capital providers in middle-market companies:
•Management expertise
•Disciplined investment approach with strong value orientation
•Focusing sourcing, due diligence, structuring and monitoring process generating positive risk-adjusted returns
•Ability to source and evaluate transactions through our investment adviser's research
•Trusted relationships throughout middle-market sponsor community
•Flexible transaction structuring            TS  [more]

Wealth disparities In the United States approaching 1920's levels

February 23, 2010 – Comments (6)

The top one percent of Income gainers have 65% of the nations wealth.    TS                    Folks, there is no way we can have economic prosperity in this country when the top 1% has all of the money. The middle class is basically being destroyed right in front of our very eyes. Consumption economies die when the consumers have no money to consume!

I see growing signs of desperation and anger as the wealth of this nation continues to get transferred to the elite of this nation.

People are starting to "lose" it as a result. This past week's airplane event in Austin was a disturbing development. I must admit that I really am not surprised. The government shouldn't be either.

Things are only going to get worse in the violence department as the taxpayers continue to get violated and more desperate as a result of this economic cataststrophe. The news media tried to downplay the actions in Austin.

I think Washington was both surprised and concerned about what took place in Texas.

I have to ask: Should the government really be surpised that an American flew a plane into an IRS building in a fit of rage as we all get repeatedly fleeced by the political and social elites of this country?           http://seekingalpha.com/article/189649-wealth-disparities-in-u-s-approaching-1920s-levels?source=hp_mostpopular  [more]

Solarfun Is heading for oversold again

February 23, 2010 – Comments (6) | RELATED TICKERS: HSOL , JASO

As I rode Solarfun with real money from $4.70 to over $10.00 I was thinking to myself that this really looks like "liftoff"....   No sooner did the stock hit fresh 52 week highs when world war two began anew. Reports from (GERMANY) that they were going to start cutting subsudies for solar....   The stock tanked even though this would INCREASE Solarfuns earnings In the longer term. Cutting or eliminating subsudies for solar In (GERMANY) will hurt smaller companies In (GERMANY) the most because It will result In price wars and direct competition between all solar companies, and the larger companies will have an early advantage,at least In the beginning because of superior economies of scale. The point that I want to make Is that solar companies In China will BENEFIT from this situation !! Solar companies In China can produce solar cells cheaper than anyone In the world. Analysts have quietly been RAISING their earnings estimates of Solarfun, and JA Solar as well !!                                                                            SHANGHAI, Jan 08, 2010  -- Solarfun Power Holdings Co., Ltd. China's high growth ghost towns

February 19, 2010 – Comments (3)

Visiting the eerily vacant epicenter of unsustainable progress, far out in the grasslands of Inner Mongolia.

In the gritty Inner Mongolian wind, I stood at the pinnacle of the global economy, at least in terms of GDP growth: the main drag of one of the fastest growing cities in the fastest-growing region in all of China, the world's supposed new economic powerhouse.  Built in a breakneck five years, Kangbashi is a state-of-the-art city full of architectural marvels and sculpture gardens. There's just one thing missing: people. The city, built by the government and funded with coal money, its chief industries energy and carmaking, has been mostly vacant for as long as it has been complete, except for the massive municipal headquarters. It's a grand canyon of empty monoliths. In a paradox only possible in today's economic system, Kangbashi manages to be both a boom town and a ghost town at the same time.   [more]

Utilities are looking at smaller reactors In the coming nuclear age

February 17, 2010 – Comments (4) | RELATED TICKERS: SO , USU , MDR

I recommended my first utility stock on caps yesterday with a look towards the future. While there are always risks Involved with any technology, one has to remember that nuclear power plants have been around for a long time, and It's not as If we don't know how to build them. I recommended Southern Company because they are the first utility to receive a government loan (8 Billion dollars) to build the first nuclear power plant here In the United States In the past 30 years. USEC Is a company that also fits Into this new nuclear age, ( although not a utility) as well as Mc Dermott (which owns Babcock & Wilcox )and I am sure that there will be a host of other companies that deserve Investors special attention. The main point being that there Is a tidal wave of change coming for the utilities sector, and If you play your cards right you may get a lot wealthier In the longer term riding that wave.   Not only Is there a tidal wave of residential foreclosures getting ready to hit the market, the commercial real estate tidal wave Is waiting In the wings.Real estate In general can basically be looked upon as a non producing asset at the present time. The financial crisis Is still alive and well, and It Involves thousands of banks across the United States. The equities markets do not like uncertainty, and right now there seems to be more questions than answers regarding the overall health of our economy....   TS

According to the latest statistics of the Federal Reserve on the banking system, the banking system, as a whole, continues to shrink. Over the last 12 months, the total assets of all commercial banks in the United States banking system shrank by $560 billion, or by about 5%. In the three months ending in January 2010, total bank assets dropped about $170 billion, with about $40 billion of the drop coming in January itself.  [more]

Buy this utility stock for a rainy day

February 13, 2010 – Comments (6) | RELATED TICKERS: SO

This company just got a preliminary loan guarantee from the federal government of 14 billion dollars to build the first new nuclear power plant In the United States In the past 30 years In Augusta Georgia. Although still years away from construction,If you accumulate shares over the long term,I feel that you will be rewarded handsomely. At a recent $31.50 per share you get a dividend yield of 5.5% . This will be my first reccommendation of a utility stock, and In this case I feel that this Is an extremely compelling long term equity. I consider this a special situation that deserves Investors attention. The company has paid dividends for 249 consecutive quarters dating back to 1948. TS   [more]

Pump and dump, not this one.

February 10, 2010 – Comments (20)

Every once In a while I find a company In transition that represents a compelling Investment opportunity. This particular company Is not rateable on TMF because of Its small market cap. However,I believe that the company Is making all the right moves to reward patient shareholders. At a recent $1.80 per share,I feel that the risk/ reward Is positive for the longer term. The comany used to be called SCM Microsystems, but now goes by the name Identive Group (INVE) There was an Insider purchase today of 178,000 shares at $1.78, a good sign Indeed.....

Identive is focused on building the signature company in logical and physical access control, identity management and RFID technologies across the globe. The group stands in a unique position, at the center of three convergence trends: the integration of physical and logical access systems, the enhancement of smart cards with contactless technologies, and the marriage of identification technologies with mobile communication.

RFID is a core technology in these trends, emerging as the replacement for traditional identification products from simple barcodes to more sophisticated identification solutions such as contact smart cards. There are many reasons for this migration including ease of use, increased security and improved durability. This technology is becoming the preferred choice for a variety of applications in the commercial, industrial and government sectors. It is being used in corporate employee ID cards, company email & IT networks and facility access control; in national ID cards and passports; in transport passes, banking and credit cards, in anti-theft devices for automobiles and motorcycles; and for the identification of surgical implants, companion animals and waste management containers, to name a sampling. Through its group of companies, Identive provides identification and authentication solutions for many of these applications ranging from enterprise, to end user mobile installations.

Identive offers its customers and partners a unique understanding of the industry dynamics, emerging trends and technology drivers. It combines advanced technology with a deep industry knowledge of the players, market trends and underlying factors that shape them. To supply the various applications in this marketplace, a value chain has developed that comprises many steps and is fairly complex. As with other high technology offerings in developing markets, many small players have emerged to supply the different components of a system. Typically, a supplier focuses on one or two of the areas that make up a system: transponders, readers, ID subsystems software or the higher level hardware and/or software of the application. Through its group of companies (present and prospective acquisitions), Identive provides offerings that are broad and integrated along many stages of  the value chain, enabling customers and partners to turn to a single source to meet many of their security and identity management needs.

The Group focuses on two main segments, namely Identity Management Solutions & Services and Identification Products and Components.    http://www.identive-group.com/    (No positions yet)  [more]

Is the financial crisis really over?

February 06, 2010 – Comments (3)

I have been saying since late last year that this recovery Is based on tricks and Illusion. A perverbial house of cards just waiting to fall. We have now come to the point of the Mainstream News Media proclaiming on the front page of just about every newspaper that we are now back Into single digits on unemployment (9.7%) and that this proves that everything Is getting better. The unemployment rate fell because 400,000 people gave up looking for work and were not Included In the calculations. This entire so called recovery Is one big lie,and If you are not careful with your Investments from here on out,you could lose a LOT of money very quickly.....  Commercial construction Is In the tank, residential construction and home sales are stalled or reversing course, banks are not lending money, and consumers are not spending money, their saving It. The so called stimulus package has helped Wall Street, and a handful of large financial Institutions like Goldman Sachs, but other than that It has failed. Obama spent a year on healthcare Instead of focusing on the economy and producing jobs, and now It looks like we are In SERIOUS danger of a double- dip recession or worse.   TS

Calling all fools. Need your help In researching this company.

February 02, 2010 – Comments (12)

Serco Group (SECCY)   They are the parent company of Serco North America. You can actually buy stock in the company In a so called (grey market)  The stock was $7.40 yesterday when I started to research the company, and It's now at $8.50. Average daily volume Is a woefully low 1500 shares, but It has already traded that amount at 10:00 AM Pacific today (Feb 2nd)  Serco Is number 28 out of 100 of the top contractors to our Federal Government. The parent company trades In London, and I cannot figure out the relationship between the London stock price and this one,and why It seems so cheap relative to the parent, and why It trades In such an obscure and limited market here In the United States. If you look at the parent company and what they do,and how profitable they are, this stock seems very cheap to me. Help me out here....   http://www.serco.com/      TS  [more]
