The end of the ski season here in Vail is upon us. (April 13 closing date) It has been a great year for snow despite Thanksgiving and early December that looked more like golf season. Mother nature saved the day for local hotels retailers and of course the ski area. Vail Resorts (MTN). Expect MTN numbers to be down again on the next quarter. They already posted a drop in the last quarter. (Nov, Dec, Jan) Expect a 5% YOY decline in revenue for Feb, Mar, and Apr. The lodging businesses have all seen similar results. A good year but not as good as 2006-07. [more]

First of all Tom Tancredo is an idiot. He has done more to damage the tourism industry and the national economy than any politician I can name. Labor rates are on the rise because of a national hispanic histeria. Illegals are doing the work and paying in IRS taxes with no hopes of filing a return. Their burden on society is laughable. Their benefit is immeasurable.

Well the snow finally came...and came...and is still coming. Amazing what difference a week or two can make. Arrabelle retail finally opened in late December. Most of the condos and hotel rooms have not yet. Four Seasons is well underway as is Solaris. The Ritz is moving more slowly. Real estate is holding firm in the valley despite the national trends. Expect a weaker real estate market by summer as sellers don't find buyers for the older locations.

Early booking numbers are down at central reservations. Failed delivery of a new cenres computer system helped keep bookings down. Foreign employees to staff those new computers is also foiled with visa delays. Various season dates are behind numbers from last year. April numbers will suffer with an early Easter in March. November hasn't snowed yet. Early December will suffer from poor opening snow. Chances of beating last years numbers is going downhill fast. 3-6" snow predicted for today didn't happen. [more]

Time to start worrying. November 10 and very little snow on the ground. It does this every year to some extent. We in the hotel business start to worry. Vail will open in six days and there will likely only be one run open from man made snow. Beaver Creek is using all their water to make snow for the race course. We had a wet summer, can mother nature provide some more precipitation?
