I began my post educational career as a journalist. It was the early Seventies, before Woodward and Bernstein, before the movie about them, before journalism was trendy. I had grown up in Chicago. In my senior year of high school, Mother had sat me down at the green, formica kitchen table to discuss college. 'You can go anywhere you want as long as you live at home, work for your father, and pay for it yourself,' were her words and they are still with me today, probably verbatum. I applied to three Chicago area colleges (DePaul, Roosevelt, and the University of Illinois at Navy Pier), choosing DePaul for no particularly good reason. I already had spent time working on Dad's used car lot, but also for Maurice L. Rothschild junior department store downtown, and for a vendor of specialty advertising such as printed pens, key chains, etc. The latter had led me to go door to door, business to business, often amongst new and used car dealers, convincing them to buy key chains or the shiny stickers for car bumpers, imprinted with the dealer's name. First Entry: I have named this project Kvedarna, which in Yiddish is also know as Chweidan. It is the township along the River Jura from which my maternal ancestors moved to America, principally (at first) Chicago. [more]
