Inside Value Service Deserves Bankruptcy Charm!

April 11, 2008 – Comments (11) | RELATED TICKERS: FMD

Airlines to Underperform

April 09, 2008 – Comments (3) | RELATED TICKERS: AAMRQ , UAUA.DL , LCC

Last August, I put my red thumbs down on half a dozen US based airlines. Today's trouble at American worked as a reminder for me that I never wrote a pitch. And I promised to always explain my CAPS picks. So here it is:
 - None of them make any profit to speak of
 - Fuel costs are one of the major drags on operating margins. With fuel prices as high as they are now, and still climbing, it becomes more difficult for airlines to become profitable
 - The slowdown in the economy (notice, I am bot even using the "R" word in this context yet) is having a negative impact on air travel
 - A significant number of the airlines are in bankruptcy, about to go bankrupt, or just emerged from bankruptcy
 - Many of them have unionized workforces. While I strongly believe that unions can bring about good changes, they are obstructionists when it comes to restructuring. Most airlines need to restructure to stay alive or to emerge from bankruptcy
 - Airlline service STINKS. If I can avoid flying, I will.  [more]

Now THIS is why we are doomed!
