Pardon me, but I’m just getting back to blogging. Just got back from a week’s vacation to Puerto Vallarta, and my mind is certainly not on investing matters. It’s still back there in the sun, sand and surf. Yeah, back there in the “Pork Chop Death” zone commonly known as Mexico. Mrs. Gar & I left early on Sunday, April 26th, just a day after the national media got a hold of this story and started fanning the flames. We got concerned calls from family & friends, asking us to take precautions and be careful and to think about postponing the trip. For fun (and just in case things got really wacky), we brought along a pair of blue surgical hospital masks like you’ve seen WHO workers wearing. I didn’t put a lot of faith in the epidemic story. Just over a hundred people in Mexico City were infected when we were packing up to leave. So? I thought. More than that are infected each year with regular influenza virus. Not a big deal. Then the death counts started rolling in. Still, I didn’t put a lot of stock in the story. Here’s why.  [more]
