Good News for Shipping and Iron Ore Stocks

June 24, 2008 – Comments (3) | RELATED TICKERS: CLF , DRYS , RTP.DL

Good news for holders of shipping stocks like DRYS, DSX, etc. and for some iron ore mining companies like Rio Tinto (symbol:RTP), BHP Billiton Limited (symbol:BHP) and Cleveland-Cliffs (symbol CLF). This article on MineWeb highlights China's difficulty in getting enough high-quality iron ore into their country in order to produce steel for their ever-expanding infrastructure. To quote Tessa Kruger's article: "China's rising iron ore imports implies significant rises in the price of iron ore in the long term that will see this year's tough negotiation of Australian iron ore contract prices intensify in future."  [more]

"Wash Me!" -- The Sink-or-Swim Point for Washington Mutual

June 10, 2008 – Comments (3) | RELATED TICKERS: WAMUQ

We've reached the Sink-Or-Swim point for Washington Mutual.

[NOTE: I'd originally posted the following as a followup pitch for why I'm closing my WM pick, but decided it might also benefit those who only read blogs and don't follow up on stock pitches. With my pitches, I try to explain to myself and others why I buy into a stock and why I sell it as well. It helps me keep honest with myself and see where I'd called things right or wrong and, more importantly, why I made that call. This is just another example. ]   [more]

My crystal ball is in the shop for repairs, so I’m working with my Magic 8-Ball today, and she’s showing a mean spirit on the question of “Will the US economy improve over the next 3-4 years?” as shown in the picture below.  [more]

Consumption Junction, Part Four: Crude Awakening

June 04, 2008 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: EWW , EEM , XOM

Continuing on the theme from my last blog post, that being the craziness of $200/barrel oil, I found a very direct, informative web page with lots of answers to some of the questions I have in mind. Paul Horsnell, head of commodities research at Barclays Capital, answers many different questions about oil in this article here, entitled “Crude Awakening for Oil Consumers”. I thought he answered the questions very directly and with some well thought out replies. See what you think from some passages I’ve selectively reprinted below, statements which either back what I’ve written earlier or with which I agree now. Comments within square brackets or outside quotes are my own.   [more]
