Misinformation, mistruths and politics

September 30, 2008 – Comments (7)

It has been amazing to see just how much disconnect and disagreement there has been in the last two weeks about why we need to pass a bailout bill and the calamities that will occur if we don't.  We shouldn't really be surprised that no one believes our politicians...we have no leaders anymore, just politicians.  However, what I have been surprised about is various blogs here that have denegrated people who happen to have differences of opinion about what the best strategy is for our country and our economy over the long term.  [more]

Pumping out the septic tank

September 04, 2008 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: FSLR , ABK , FCSX

I believe that the markets are just like life, full of ups and downs.  Portfolios are even more like things in life.  They all start with definition and purpose and mostly work fine until one day, they need a little maintenance.  Right now, my portfolio both on CAPS and in real life are like an overloaded septic tank...it is time for a good pump and flush.  For anyone who has ever lived in a rural area and had a septic tank, you know what I am talking about.  A septic tank is just a cement box that is used to hold stuff while the good stuff rises to the top and eventually makes very good fertilizer.  You really don't even notice that you are not on city sewer until one day, the tank is filled with bad stuff and not leaving any room for the good stuff.  Hopefully before it backs up into your house, you have someone come out and pump out the sediment that has settled, fill it back up with good clean water, flush the lateral lines and you are good to go again.  [more]

Two sectors that I believe are still undervalued

September 13, 2007 – Comments (0)

I was just reviewing my overall CAPS portfolio.  I think I am like many people both here and in real life that if returns are really good, we pay less attention to stocks that we own especially if we are inclined to keep them over the long haul.  However, over the last few days there seemed to have been a disconnect between economic factors and stock prices in many sectors.  I believe that the oil services industry is broadly undervalued at this time.  I also really like the basic metals sector over the long term as I believe that this sector is a little more defensive during uncertain times and volatility.  [more]

Seeing red (ink) while thinking green

August 28, 2007 – Comments (0)

I recently read a fascinating article in an economics journal.  The thrust of the article was that in the US, consumer tastes and preferences have shifted regarding environmentally friendly (green) ideas to a point where that demand curves have actually shifted.  Positive for green products and negatively for those items that are considered to be bad for the environment.  [more]

Well, most likely I won't keep this charm for long...but it has been an amazing run over the last few weeks.  This is my first blog and I feel the pressure to have amazing insight like some of my favorite CAPS players including SpecBear and Demon Doug.  If you are looking for that insight....don't mind reading any further.  [more]
