Motley Fool Contest

April 29, 2009 – Comments (16) | RELATED TICKERS: TAR , PED

Dear Motley Fool Community,

I am annoyed that there is no cash prize for winning the contest sponsored by Motley Fool unless there are 600 participants or more.  Yes I am just bitter because I will probably win the current contest and get the consolation prize of a subscription (which I don't really want).  If you have not joined the Tarped Banks contest, please do so for me :)  What are the community's thoughts on this?

The "win" is the thing.  I never bet my friends more than $1 on anything.

I can't see why the prize makes any difference to anyone. The nature of the ratings system makes it far more like a lottery than any legit stock analysis competition. On any given day you have 20+ people swapping spots for the #1 position and it is very easy to go from dead last to first in a short period of time.

I'm fairly certain that we would have more than enough people to warrant cash prize payouts if the contests were a reflection of skill rather than luck. So in short, the current prizes are a reflection of the quality of the competition.

A cash prize would be nice. But I would be satisfied with a trucker hat that has "Fool of the Year!' stinciled on the front of it.

Since there is a MLGtrader and MLG100 account, then I think Motley should compromise with your winnings and give you the flank steak:)

I like the hat idea. What say you TMF?

How about a trucker's hat that says FOOL on it?

I would actually prefer a hat over the subscription.  I am currently in college and do not have money to invest anyways, so a subscription will not be of much help.  I already have a free subscription to Motley Fool Pro, which is interesting sometimes, but I don't use it for investing.

"FOOL" is good. I just hope most people do not interpret that to mean we are a US congressman or senator.

Clearly, luck is a huge piece. I am currently in 2nd position and know very little about the banks ... I just took a dogs of the dow approach and it has worked out. But you and I share four picks that were all made on the same day by both of us, yet there is a 63 point spread (to your side) in the contest score on those four banks alone. Is that skill? And, while I agree that you probably will win, don't be too quick to claim that prize you don't want. There are still two days of lunacy left... but send it my way if it ends up in your corner.

No problem.  MLGtrader, shoot me your mailing address (jkeeling@fool.com) and you'll get your hat.  Looks like it will be for second place, but no shame in that.  Well done!

Well, it seems we were both wrong about you winning. Glad to see that you will be getting a hat, though. Maybe third place will get a pencil!

But most likely it will just be a free entry into the next bit of fun!

If losing a 100+ point lead in the last 2 days is not proof enough that luck is the single biggest factor in these contests I don't what is.

A more skill based contest format is needed.
