The Next Big Thing. version 2.0

Back in August of 2007 I posted this blog The Next Big Thing to drum up ideas for where to invest next.  The point was, rather than invest in what everyone's buzzing about right now you should look for an area that has no buzz but probably will soon.

In that blog I suggested investing in rechargeable battery companies.  I suggested ABAT and ULBI as two possibilities.  Some other stock that I keep my eye on (though don't necessarily consider good investments) include CBAK, VLNC, BYDDY.PK, ENX, XIDE, AXPW.OB, HEV, ALTI.  Since that blog all but one have outperformed the market... some (ABAT) by quite a bit (ABAT).

The best days are still ahead for this segment of the market.  With tons of money from Obama's stimulus plan going to green energy and a wave of new hybrid and electric vehicles coming out over the next couple of years, and even the ever impending IPO of A123 the next year should be very exciting for this group.

But enough about my prediction.  Does anyone else have a suggestion for the next big thing?

Whatever this guy invents follow it to start-up. He is an NYU math professor who demonstrated a true multi-point touch screen in 2006. It is destined to leave the mouse and keyboard behind. He is working on other things as well.

Water desalination, purification? May be not the next, but in 20-30 years from now it  will be big. But since the market only look 30 min ahead these days, there is no hurry.

I find tidal energy generators very interesting, although I do not know enough the subject to claim they are the next big thing or that they are even a practical form of alternative energy. I think the concept could eliminate many of the hurdles wind and solar face, such as NIMBY (noise and eyesores), land costs, and inconsistent/unpredictable weather.

BTW - The Novo ticker should read NVO for anyone that is interested in looking into it more. I like the company as well.

Since it appears you are looking for immediate investment opportunities, I should have mentioned that the only pure play public company that I have found in tidal/wave power is OPTT.  OPT is not ratable in CAPS any longer due to market cap constraints and would be quite speculative at this stage. STO and PG&E have projects, but any financial benefit (unlikely right now) from this technology would be a drop in the bucket compared to their primary business lines.
