Continuing a sort of theme that I started earlier this week, I decided to do a mid-year check on the "best" stock picks for 2009 based on a report by Zacks. I'm not sure but I think the report is only available to paid subscribers and I was able to obtain a copy. Anyway, for what its worth I thought I would share the results of my investigation.
The best stock picks for 2009 according to this report included their share price as of 12/4/08 and an annualized yield at that time of 4.21%.
Here are the picks as of 6/4/09 with their current dividend yields:
Ticker Price 12/4/08 Price 6/4/09 Change Yield
CL $61.76 $71.32 15.48% 2.80%
DLM $6.40 $8.40 31.25% 2%
ETP $32.19 $43.08 33.83% 8.50%
JNJ $56.18 $55.84 -0.61% 3.60%
KR $26.88 $22.99 -14.47% 1.60%
NRP $14.30 $24.24 69.51% 9.40%
RIG $47.98 $82.02 70.95% 0
STJ $29.62 $40.40 36.39% 0
XOM $76.27 $72.98 -4.31% 2.30%
Average change in share price = 26.45%
Average (annualized) dividend yield = 3.36%
As you can see, the best picks so far have been RIG and NRP, and adding the dividend for NRP it is outperforming RIG. When you consider the dividend for ETP it is also looking pretty good. The annualized yield has declined a bit in 6 months but overall the picks are outperforming the S&P.
Food for thought. It will be interesting to see what the next 6 months will bring!
