Michael Jackson Exposes the Media

I really enjoyed this thought on Tech Ticker:
The King of Pop's death is another example of the growing dominance of new online media and increasing irrelevance of old traditional media, says Michael Wolff founder of Newser.com and Vanity Fair columnist. Based on the traditional media's coverage prior to his death, "what you would have inferred is that no one liked MJ, everybody thought he was a complete weirdo that he was written-off marginalized, absolutely forgotten," Wolff says. When in fact, the opposite is true. Two thoughts:
1) I'm ignoring the old media/new media argument...the thought I love is that we really do get so caught up in the news and recency that we forget the big picture. Almost all coverage of Michael Jackson over the last decade has been negative...even though so many of us have such a connection to his music (witness the 1.6 million people applying for entrance to the memorial service). It's a reminder to keep a long-term perspective (in investing and in life) and to appreciate people and circumstances before they go.
2) I went to newser.com for the first time today. It's pretty sweet...the visuals really help me scan the news quickly.
