Well I don't know if it is the best idea... but when the stock market takes a hike... I just turn the computer off and do something else. Pretty much I turned it off last year when Cramer said Sell, Sell, Sell. I actually started trading again in March 09 at a small level and have slowly cranked it up through the summer.
I'm interested to see that my Fool rating is doing pretty well with my picks running blind (meaning I didn't pay any attention to them). I now review my picks 2 years later and find that they're still amongst my favorites, which is probably not surprising.
AAPL has taken over the world... ok... not quite yet..... but soon.
ETFC is barely surviving.
My big strategy (real money accounts) has been to try to find stocks that weren't going to go bankrupt and yet paid a high dividends. For at least 2 quarters I was able to move quickly between these stocks and collect the dividends (NRF,MAC, NMM). This worked great until most companies slashed them. While I didn't get caught in these stocks... I'm still hoping that they will recover some of the their lost glamor.
...More reflections later.
