September 23, 2009 – Comments (20) | RELATED TICKERS: BAA

Anyone have any recommendations on gold and,or silver stocks? Not my specialty, and I know that some of you really know the mining companies. I think I need some exposure here,as I truly believe that we will see INFLATION on grand scale sooner rather than later... The only one that I have followed at all Is BANRO (BAA) because It came up on screen that I use that follows charting trends... TS

TS . . . I agree, (I went to the link and saw) "its rise (re. gold) above $1000/oz. is not really that impressive." Yes, indeed, gold will keep going, and the Fed is helping it again today.

I just do not have faith that if things go bad for the U.S. stock market that you'll ever get the real metal out of the vaults that these equities promise.

If you want gold (or silver -- to buy groceries), hold it in your hand for it is currency.

Buying now is a little like chasing the market, but if you are gonna play gold I would suggest JAG and IVN. IVN is currently the better play, because they are due to get approval from Mongolia any day now for a big gold and copper mining project.

I like almost all silver companies due to the gold/silver ratio, but like you saw in my other post, I'm expecting a pull-back in commodities. My 2 favorite silver producers right now are Silver Wheaton and First Majestic.

Rather than follow, I suggest that you proactively look at undervalued commodities.

I personally missed the gold wave, but I jumped on with silver and copper. I am maybe a little early with sugar, and I know I'm early with fertilizer. If you want to beat inflation, you have to buy the commodity before everyone else does. While you still get protection when you follow, you don't get the reward for pioneering.

For Silver, Sinch recommends CDE and I reccomend PAAS.

For Gold: I rec GG, IAG and MFN. Review Sinchs' older posts for his picks before you invest.

Sinch is a great resource for gold and silver and one of my favorite bloggers period!

I own CDE and PAAS, but will be selling both shortly.

While I currently own GG and MFN I feel that they were more of a spec play than my other stocks and will be selling them tomorrow. If you don't expect a market correction though, they have a high beta and will outperform in the short term.

I've never been a fan of IAG.

I'm not a fan of the management GD and I believe that they are more marketers than miners.

If you are playing this as a trade, it's nothing to worry about, but miners need to have  a skill set that they simply don't possess.

If you are looking at this long term, I would look elsewhere.

and about 20 other guys when it comes to metals.

Seriously if you want to know everything in the world there is to know about metals, read their blogs.

If you do that research, you'll be telling me who to buy in the market in a very short time.

I apologize because I'm doing this off the top of my head and forgetting people, but the important thing to take away is that there are a ton of people interested in the same thing that you are, and like you are, they are doing research. If you concentrate on just the people that agree, you'll learn a lot, and if you concentrate on the people that disagree, you'll learn everything.

My picks are ones with more leverages like NG, SWC, and HL. ABX can bid for NG again at $10+ per share.

NG rejected ABX at $16/sh . . . i don't think $10 would cut it.  gold has gone up about 1/3 since that old tender and the catalog of NG reserves has just gotten bigger/better.

when M/A heats up again (2010?) another run at NG by ABX would not surprise me in the least, but any offer would probably have to be a good chunk north of $20 to win over shareholders.  those NG reserves are massive.

whether it's swallowed up or goes into production, i like NG's prospects long term.

disclosure: 1,000 sh NG

It amazes me how a lot of investors like gold and silver miners.

If inflation is the problem, miners are a shitty way to hedge against inflation, because mining costs increase with inflation.

Your best bet is GTU or CEF.
