September 25, 2009 – Comments (26) | RELATED TICKERS: ATVI , SBLK , SUNH

Hey,

I'm not really poor, but I am certainly new to this whole "investing thing."  Like many, I got into it when the market took a dump knowing that it would eventually go back up and I could probably make some money on the side.

I'm a pretty young guy and I'm getting married in a few months so I didn't want to go crazy - over the last 6 months I've bought and sold about a dozen different stocks and have netted a profit of about $2,500.  I've never had more than $8,000 in my investment account.

Right now I think you all will probably think my portfolio is crap.  You are probably right.  But here it goes anyway:

ATVI - Activision (Videgame/Ent.)

SUNH - Sun Healthcare (Healthcare)

SBLK - Starbulk Carrier (Shipping)

DNN - Denison Mines (Energy/Uranium)

SNRY - Solar Energy Initiatives (Energy/Solar)

CTIC - Cell Theraputics (Healthcare/Gene Therapy)

That's all I got at the moment - pretty prospective/longshot.  Go ahaed, rip me a new one.

Thanks,

SBLK - Starbulk Carrier (Shipping)    Pitch by: topsecret09 7/19/09 12:02 PM SBLKAs a contrarian,I really like to look at solid out of favor companies, especially In sectors that are not doing well now,BUT.... will probably do very well once the economy gets back on track. This would be a good stock to accumulate at these price levels. There current book value Is $9.70 per share! ,and they are paying a dividend that would be just shy of 6%! The companies ships are fully booked for 2009,71% contracted for 2010,and 42% contracted for 2011!!....... Fudamentals will catch up with this stock when looking to the future. JIM

CTIC - Cell Theraputics (Healthcare/Gene Therapy)    Insiders have SOLD over 2 million shares since mid-august... not a good sign at the present time. If you like BIOTECHS and want to play one for the longer term, take a look at LEXICON PHARMACEUTICALS  (LXRX) http://www.lexicon-genetics.com/about-us/index.html           They have a committed financial backer In INVUS  http://www.invus.com/  and a strong pipeline that bodes well for their future. CTIC suckered me in...  I'll freely admit that - I read their most recent release and said to myself "HOLY CRAP THEY CURED CANCER" and bought a couple hundred shares - just in case it was actually true.  Sounds like it probably isn't.

They got me.  I'm a sucker.

Lexicon Is one that I will be adding to my CAPS list of companies.... I have just concluded my research as of about ONE HOUR AGO,and have decided that this one may be a real gem In the making. I just happened to see your post and you are the first one to hear this from me....  It just popped to 3.78 and Is coming back down seeking a new level. Hard to say where this one will level out at on the charts, but I will be accumulating shares below $2.50 Should have time to nibble away at this one.... TS

Yeah ATVI is one of my long term Holdings same for RMCF,RST And Dar a strong Balance sheet and product line go a long way toward getting me to commit real money. When I buy into a more speculative stock if it gets a big pop I take my gains and go home less solid footing so no need to risk it.

The market has it's head in the sand as to the continuing problems of the dry bulk industry. There is and will continue to be an oversupply of ships. Expected growth in the economy is what, maybe 5%? The fleet will grow by 25% over the next two years. According to the forward freight agreements, the BDI will be falling well into 2010.

Specific to SBLK, they have debt of $331 million and a real value of their ships of $260 million, tops. They are in breach of loan covenants, and when the waivers expire, they must have a 125%  fair market value collateral to debt ratio. They will be forced to raise cash by selling more shares as cash from operations is falling.

Many people hang their hat on the 100% charter coverage for 2009. Well regardless, that didn't stop charterers from renegotiating rates down. They will take a tremendous hit to earnings over the next two quarters. It's right in the SEC filings.

There is no need to rip you a new one. All of us at times are our harshest critics. You have a good feel for your strengths and weaknesses. You have some good companies. I congratulate you on those picks. I hope they serve you well. Sell the others when they have bounced back if you still don't like them. My biggest piece of advise is to not spread your money out too much between too many companies. My IRA is made up of six companies but diversified enough not to interfere with each other. So far this is serving me very well.

Any love for SUNH?  I have another buy order of a few shares at $8.50.  Seems to me that the threat of Obamacare drove prices down a lot in the healthcare sector - but now it seems like Obamacare isn't goinng to happen - or if it does - will be far less invasive than originally feared which - in my mind- means that helathcare sector should recover.

Am I wrong?

QwertyHero,

I've rated SBLK in my CAPS portfolio but am afraid to buy with real $$$. It's a risk/reward thing. I think lots of China microcap picks have the same reward characteristics with significantly less risk. If you can stomach SBLK I think you can also sink your teeth into a few of these:

CHBT, CAGC, HOGS, YSYB.OB, CKGT.OB, CNOA.OB, WKBT.OB, SKBI, GRRF, CHGI.OB, CSGH.OB, CSR, NED, CAEI, CHCG.OB, CHFI.OB, WUHN, CPQQ.OB, GFRE.OB, PUDA, SGZH.OB, SCLX.OB, CCGY.OB

SUNH is a good one. It is very cheap based on fundamentals and the price has been depressed due to overblown fears of a nationalized health system. Almost all of SUNH's revenue comes from Medicare and Medicaid, which have been guaranteed NOT to be cut as part of a new health care system. Hang on, and if it dips, accumulate.

With so many quality companies about to get cheap again, why speculate so much.  Keep your favorite three and sell the rest so you have money to put 70-80% of your portfolio in great companies at good prices soon.
