AllStarPortfolio- What about closing bad picks?

So if a pick is not working out, say like SQNM. . . just for an example, not to make a target; is it better to hold forever and take possibly more loss, or better to close, and put a fellow fool like Portefeuille back to work knockin' out picks and points?

It's more of a strategy question than a SQNM question, though we may use that or another pick to discuss the strategy.

I have played with the strategy of closing everything as it passed -15% and leaving the good picks open, for a while once on marketwatch, and i did fairly well with it.

************************  TO CHOOSE A STOCK FOR THIS PORTFOLIO READ BELOW

 TWO green thumb per person. Your best pick, and your BEST PITCH, please. All picks MUST have a pitch, and a time frame. Minimum Time Frame 6 months. Players are free to change the pick as often as caps permits.

   No Ultras (FAZ was picked before the discussion was finished, and will be closed soonish). No Bear ETFS. No .OB stocks. Only one .PK pick per player.

 To qualify for a pick you must:

 Have a RATING of more than 99 on the day of pick

   -OR-

 Be a "yes"man with a RATING of 97 or higher on the day of pick

   -AND-

 Have been a caps player for more than 6 months.

    -OR-

Be in the Top Ten at the time of pitch, or have at one time been the Top Fool.

There is also a shadow account at wallstreetsurvivor where we track with dollars, and compete against Top Bloggers on MSN. Each player gets $2,000 starting money to use as desired between the two picks. Fools who do not dictate their preferences for WSS will have the 'funds' handled by the AllStarPortfolio administrators (me).

``````````
   To submit a pick Players should attach their pitch to a blog from this caps account. I will then copy that to the pitch on the stocks page, so that it will be visible on both the stock page and the quickstats page. I will of course place your name, and score at time of pick on the pitch.
You can name your stock here, for dibs (will hold for 7 days), but i will not post the stock until you have made your pitch, and picked a time frame, also.
I am willing to share the password with a few someones, if they would like, to facilitate timing.
There has already been some interest shown in making an 'Investment Vehicle' to work with this portfolio. We have opened a google group to discuss the possibility. To keep static to a minimum we have created it as a private group discussion. To be invited to the discussion, please send your screen name to allstarportfolio@gmail.com and ask for an invitation. Thanks.
Please keep the SQNM pick open. I have suggested buying more for the wallstreetsurvivor portfolio in comment #11 here.
Unless the player is an idiot, I'd leave this to the discretion of the player.  In the case of SQNM, port is not an idiot.
solaris, can I pick GTN?
Here is my pitch.
If GTN ever falls below $2, close it right away.
I'll work on my second pick over the weekend.
Good Luck!
You've asked players to make their best judgement on picks.  IMHO, losing picks should stay open until the player asks for it to be closed.
In cases where you can't get a response from whoever picked the stock, something like a CAPS stop-loss might make sense.
What do you do when a player picks a stock and then leaves Caps?
Such as GoodVibe and FAZ
Do you keep it open forever?
Hey fools, I didn't really mean SQNM, or really even AllStarPortfolio (though i suppose i could have spoke to you from another account).
Port, i missed your post about buying more SQNM, . . BUT NOWS YOUR CHANCE. . .. wait, there it is. .  .
Can you put $1000 into EMC, $500 into SQNM (thus increasing that position) and keep the rest (ca. $629.90) in FACT? I hope having 3 positions is okay as long as we don't have that many participants.
So please "sell" 85 FACT shares, "buy" 55 EMC shares and "add" 150 SQNM shares.
 Hmmm, what to do? Part of me wants to say yes to a fool like you, but part of me wants to anticipate that EVENTUALLY i will have to start disentangling the mess when we reach 200 picks here, or run out of money there.. . . . . .
And it's also important to me (and to the method and the public, and the players, etc) that the WSS account mirror this account as close as possible. . . . . .
I really don't want to do it, sir. If it was up to me, i would just give you my money and walk away for 5 years (no really, how about that?), but if i do that i really "opens up a can o' worms" (whatever that means).
I think i would rather say no, though it's hard. In my position as administrator here, and in past projects, i feel i should complete my dharma (duty). Discipline is one of the attributes of a good portfolio.
Divy up the 2950 how you want, but please choose your two picks. FACT was closed last night, so i am stuck with that, unless you want to reopen it.
I know a supergenius like yourself will understand.
As far as the original question for this post. I commend you fools for your apparent real knowledge of your picks. Every time i ask if we should close a pick, almost every vote says 'is the pick worth more than it's worth.
You fools really are the best, and i am fully confidant that this portfolio will continue to do well.
