More about water

October 22, 2009 – Comments (6) | RELATED TICKERS: VE , HOO

My first attempt at blogging was about water. It was a poorly written blog. Nontheless members seem to be sympathetic to the issue and willing to be open to ways in which we investors can find value whether through utilities (VE, HOO) which pay dividends or desalination plants or piping or companies owning water rights. It is a complicated issue and probably little money for day  traders to make money.

I am in no ways a water expert, but I do believe once we reach a new economic equilibrium and can focus on the future.

I found an interesting website for anyone interested in the issue www.circleofblue.org

This is a link from them about the tibetan plateau. I have illuded to the Guarani aquifer in south american, the tibetan plateau is the same thing for china/ india/ pakistan/ when you look on a map http://www.circleofblue.org/waternews/2008/world/china-tibet-and-the-strategic-power-of-water/

Here is a 3 minute video showing how everything ties into water- food, cars, your i-pods, oil... basically everything we invest in http://www.circleofblue.org/waternews/2009/world/video-no-reason/

Sort of related to water is corn. While drinking beers on the beach a few months ago my uncle challenged me to find any product you use that does not have corn in it. I failed. http://www.ontariocorn.org/classroom/products.html

With decreasing water & the degredation of our topsoil (think how much fertilizer we go through)- watch how every product the Fools pitch goes up in price as the price of corn increases. Not a worry for those who watch the stock market every 10 seconds- but its just one more thing to consider as an investment tomorrow

Although corn (a grass) is pollinated by wind, lots of other things are pollinated by bees which go into everyday products we use. I have a friend who is a bee keeper who has been warning for years the bees are disappearing http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/02/070223-bees.html,

As a follow up agriculture may be a great hedge to inflation. Crops also have nothing to do with water (just kidding).  GRU and DBA seem like the ways to bet the futures market for a basket of crops. When you look at decimated topsoil (ever heard of algae blooms in the gulf of mexico because of the nitrates in the rivers), decreasing water availability, the cost of farming which is driving the fsmall/ mid-sized growers out of business... I am willing to bet the price of bread will increase more (relative percentage increase in prices) than the price of gold.

A lot of people watch the price of oil to look at inflation because it is in our transportation costs. You might want to look at the futures of corn- since you cant make anything without it (see#3).
