Here's a very interesting chart from the NY Times that compares the decline in employment across recent recessions. The relative severity of the current recession is astounding. It is interesting to note that the biggest impact on jobs has been in the blue collar sector (e.g. manufacturing and construction) and I fear that many of these jobs will not come back for many years. This unemployment/underemployment could drag on retail sales for a long time.
