A star trek economy?
If you have time, you should read this piece from Salon.com. A group in Switzerland is proposing a minimum universal paycheck. Everyone in the country would get paid $2800 a month, regardless of what they do or have done.
This is called a "Star Trek" economy, because we have arrived at a future where efficiency has risen enough, and there is enough widespread prosperity and resources that we no longer need to have everyone fight to earn a living. The the Star Trek universe, this occurred because energy had become so plentiful and technological advances had reached a level where manufacturing objects / food could happen using a replicator (like a microwave, but rearranges atoms).
It is unlikely that the Swiss proposal will happen, but very interesting that such a fundamental economic idea (work -> money) could be changing in our lifetime.
