A Survey of Christmas Gifts: Please Share :)

I thought that it would be fun to list what gifts I got from what company if known. Also feel free to list the gifts that you got if you wish to. It doesn't have to be an exhaustive list. I'll be as thorough as possible to generate as many comments as I can. Part of the fun of getting gifts is talking about them. Yes, some of us have not yet entirely lost a sense of amazement that others actually go to the trouble to get us pleasant surprises--most of the time that is! Also this exercise may help someone to have a creative gift idea for next year.

I will admit this is basic marketing research and yet another desperate attempt to raise some money for Thurgood Marshall by finding something of interest to talk about :). I wish the staff and students there a very Happy New Year!

I'm only going to list presents that cost money. I was thrilled to have a white Christmas, but that was something nobody bought.

Many of my gifts were books, but I will list them individually.

I got Warman's Depression Glass Field Guide from Barnes & Noble. It is very user friendly and helped me identify the mysterious little glass containers inherited from my Grandmother. They were powder jars. Who knew!

Mushrooming Without Fear: The Beginner's Guide to Collecting Safe and Delicious Mushrooms by Alexander Schwab. Both my husband and I have already read this gorgeous, full-color, user friendly, manual full of safety cautions. It was bought at a tourist trap hardware store near Asheville, NC.

My Mother-in-law got it for me as a kind of joke. One day we were taking a nature walk and all we saw were numerous kinds of mushrooms. My husband got several pictures and I jokingly said that she should write a book about mushrooms. Evidently an authoritative text has already been written.

Glad that you have some delicious baking to enjoy, blesto!

My last gift was $50 to spend however I wanted. So far I've bought a pink glass kitten (not authentic Depression era, but very cute) and a genuine Depression glas apple green cup and saucer to add to my collection. Until I flipped through the guide my husband got me I had no idea how familiar many of the patterns looked. I really am buying some happy memories, I guess.

I got a shirt, a CD, and a few other odds and ends.   My main fun was in watching my little girl, though. She got:

A Nintendo DSi.

A Tinkerbell game for the DSi.

Something called "Moon Dough," which is a modeling item like Play-Doh or Moon Sand, but which doesn't dry out and has the texture of cotton candy.

Tickets to see "Disney Princesses on Ice."  (We all enjoyed that.)

A bunch of Barbie things.  At seven years old, she's starting to get into Barbies a little bit.

Approximately 9,000 other toys and things that I can't remember off-hand.

@ #26 zymok, I like nothing better than having the time to chop up vegetables for a stew. My current set of knives are quite dull--but I got them very cheap from a dollar store. You really do get what you pay for. Perhaps I will celebrate some holiday this year with a new set of kitchen knives.

When I was just a child it was my duty to help Grandma by slicing celery whether it was for tuna fish salad or the Thanksgiving Turkey. I still am proud of my abilities to cut vegetables. My Grandpa was all about knife safety. He taught me how to properly use a paring knife to peel apples. I find slicing apples up for a pie to be soothing ritual every fall.

@ #31 Apple certainly knows how to make things many people want to buy. I got a Touch as a freebie when my husband bought an Apple Laptop with his professor discount. I use the stock feature all the time and also read Motley Fool blogs with it. For some reason I can't figure out how to use it to reply to blogs so I'm borrowing my husband's laptop.

I think INTC is better valued than Apple, but I could be wrong Apple produces amazing harvests. Hope your gift grows well for you.

See www.townhardware.com. Besides the touristy gift shop it has an actual functioning hardware store.

I'm glad that Greenville has a Mast General Store. I enjoy walking through it and seeing all the must-have items for camping or living the rustic life. Some stores manage to give one the experience of a mini-vacation.

Another neat place to go in Black Mountain besides the hardware store is the train station. A lady was selling pottery there. Back in October My mother-in-law got me a little leaf tray in shades of green and just recently she gave me an interesting dish also in shades of green for our anniversary. I like one-of-a kind glazes that assure you that nobody else in the world has a piece just like yours.
