August 15, 2008 – Comments (7) | RELATED TICKERS: ALTI , UQM

I have been following this company for some time...

http://www.a123systems.com/#/news/news133

and

http://news.cnet.com/8301-11128_3-10011255-54.html

It will be interesting to see reactions on these two stocks:

Both Altair Nanotechnologies (NASDAQ: ALTI) and UQM Technologies (AMEX: UQM) are supplying battery parts to Phoenix Motorcars for their SUT, an all electric truck that gets over 100 miles per charge.

a123systems just sounds like a name you would see on a latenight infomercial.  maybe they should take some of the ipo money and get a more legit sounding name.

A123 Systems Losing Black and Decker Before IPO?

Also, the contract for the Volt is between them and LG Chem.

I'm going to sit this one out.

I have also been following this company.  Not only is a123systems contracted for work on the Chevy Volt and Saturn VUE, but they are collaborating with P&G's Duracell division, have contracts to provide engine start batteries for Cessna Citations, and a production contract for Think Electric Vehicles.  In addition, a123systems acquisition of Canadian Hymotion has provided the company with a direct sales channel to consumers, commercial and government fleets (at least those owning a hybrid Toyota Prius).A123systems has some deep pocket partners in GE, GM and P&G.  AONE seems to be firing on all cylinders which can’t be said for rival Altair.

@eskatonic: Actually, the name origin is quite nerdy, comes from a formula:

A123Systems owes its name to the Hamaker force constant which is used to calculate the attractive and repulsive forces between particles at nano dimensions, and which begins “A123...”

But I agree there are better names. What matters to me is the pedigree and the company backers  :)
