Are you a good stock picker?

As I get older and hopefully wiser, I've become a little better picker of stocks. Some of it is I'm probably getting a little bit more conservative since I'm middle age (whatever that is). I tend to not swing at the wild pitches (hi tech small cap stocks) and now wait for the slow pitch melon (blue chip dividend payers) comin' over the plate. But I wish I had bought Apple (AAPL) when I put it into my CAPS portfolio at $86 a stub as opposed to the $312 I paid in real life though...

Now I've had some good wild pitches (thank you Netflix!) (NFLX) and some stinkers (New Frontier Media, Inc.(NOOF), bought on a whim). Now I've started using the "start date" on my CAPS portfolio to put my picks in chronological order. It's a nice feature to see how one has hopefully progressed as a stock picker.

The other thing I'm doing is that now I only put in stock in my CAPS portfolio that I'm actually buying in the real world on the same day I buy the stock. If it's good enough to bank my retirement on, it's good enough for my CAPS portfolio (or it better be). At a glance it shows what my stock picks are doing compared to the CAPS index, growth of share price, and just a reminder of when I bought the stock. It might just make you a better picker too.

Heh, heh, I'm guessing that topsecret10 linked to me to show it will NOT make you a better picker.  :-)   It's okay, I can take it, and fair enough.

Investing life has particularly been rough the past couple weeks or so.  One thing this strategy for CAPS can never account for is additional purchases of stock after the initial CAPS pick.  So I don't get credit for my XOM purchases below $60/share, or may PFE purchase below $16/share, etc.  But I find I like the accountability of posting my RL picks on CAPS.

I like to think that I've gotten better at picking stocks over the years.  However, I have also gotten more conservative as I've gotten older.  I do own options or stocks on My CAPS selections and I do like the set-up of My CAPS.  I tend to do more event trading than in the past.  Here is a blog entry on one of my top picks if anyone cares to take a look:
