Facebook is a joke. It's Geocities for 2007. It's a complete waste of time, and a revenue-free model of hype over content.

You want the world's premier social network? Work with Outlook and Web sites, and you'll have more, better, interesting data than Facebook could ever give you. Grab Yahoo! on the cheap this summer after the bagholders see how little is left in the sack, and you'll have great social networking plus great content from stuff like Flickr.

But Facebook is bogus with a capital F. Leave it alone, Balmer. Don't make me come out there.

I completely agree about Facebook, Seth.  Google is finding out the same thing the hard way with You Tube.  I like You Tube.  I use You Tube.  However, Goodle is not making any money from its investment in it, despite the fact that it gets more users every single day than people watch the Super Bowl.  Will it ever be able to adequately monetize this investment to justify the money that it spent.  Time will tell, but I'm having my doubts.

How many people are going to be interested in posting everything about themselves when the purpose changes from meeting friends to receiving advertisement. Especially when the fear mongers on the Web tell them that it Microsoft collecting all that information?

Great businesses make money almost from the start. Cisco, Microsoft, Walmart, Starbucks, Chipotle, Google, Ebay--they were all profitable near the very beginning. If Facebook doesn't have any revenue or profits, it's not worth very much.

I agree with the point saunafool makes. Social networking (of the electronic sort) is only as good as people are willing to participate in it. Perhaps in a few years the growing siblingless population of China which is already showing a preference to socialize on-line will be the only people tolerant enough to throw sheep at each other under a barage of intrusive advertising.

Seth, I think facebook is better than geocities, but you're right that it won't be all that profitable.  Myspace is still the best of all of them, I talk to people who are on all sorts of social networking sites.  I think Youtube is actually a better property than facebook overall to be quite honest.  Youtube is like flickr or photobucket but for video - I see it growing more than everything else out there.  I just wish that we could watch family guy clips and other clips on youtube without those pesky restrictions.
