First introduced in Mercury Motors outboards:
"Mercury Marine recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of the launch of the world's first direct injected two-stroke engine... OptiMax was a pioneer product when it was introduced in 1996 as a two-stroke engine that possessed many favorable attributes of a four stroke outboard, including impressive fuel economy and reduced emissions. It was widely accepted almost immediately, and has recently climbed to new heights of popularity. Ask any fisherman.
In the case of a typical V6 outboard the fuel efficiency benefits in comparison to the baseline carburetor are more than 40% over the typical drive cycle. Taking into account the fuel used and the average lifetime hours for an outboard engine (typically 350 hours over 10 years) there is a saving of over 5.5 tonnes of CO2 per engine.
Orbital has quantified the accumulated CO2 savings delivered by the OCP (Orbital combustion process) technology across the range of products in the market place. The cumulative figure of over 1,396,000 tonnes takes into the account the fuel efficiency benefits of OCP over the lifetime of the products currently in the market place.
For a second consecutive year Mercury Marine was recognized by J.D. Power and Associates for delivering the highest customer satisfaction in direct-injected (DI) outboard engines. Mercury OptiMax - the marine industry's leading DI two-stroke outboard - was recognized as "Highest in Customer Satisfaction With Two-Stroke Outboard Engines in a Tie.
The JD Power award to Mercury is a testimony to the quality and commitment by Mercury to the OptiMax engine series, ranging from 75 through to 300 Hp." Won Lemans enduro in its class.
