Biotech IPOs in General

November 12, 2010 – Comments (1)

And so it comes back to this, my blog linking other blogs.  Works for me in terms of bookmarking and notetaking.

BIO, industry trade group (some might prefer to call them a lobby) runs a blog around the business of biotech.  A recent post by David Thomas looked at the 17 biotech IPOs since the 'window opened' in August 2009.  Well, as the chart in the post shows, that window is only open a crack and for good reason, its is still pretty cold out in there in the public markets.

The chart shows (I believe, it isn't defined as well as I'd like), the performance of the companies since IPO.  Only 3 are postive at all, and only one appreciably so.  Ouch.  Interestingly, there were just as many international IPOs as in the US. And the blog post nicely shows the ones in the wings.

Buying biotech IPOs is like playing policy: The payoffs can be big, but the odds are really against you.
