A few thoughts on my birthday.
- I don't usually do a serious New Year's resolution, but I think I'm going to do a birthday resolution this year...I'm inspired by Tom Gardner, who's been imploring us Fool employees to make this our best year ever. Obviously, that's skewed more toward the work side (though not completely since we are Fools), but why not make it my best year ever in all aspects? I'm going to track my progress on my four goals in a daily Excel file. This may only last five days, but it feels like a good idea. I like the idea of slowing down and forcing myself to be accountable each day.
- May as well hype an article I wrote that got posted on the site yesterday. It was inspired by a lot of friends I know who spend all their time sweating nickel and dime decisions but blowing their savings on the big stuff. A small example. I have a friend who rents a two-bedroom apartment in Columbus, Ohio. He's pursuing his dream of becoming an actor while working at a semi-low paying job that affords him the flexibility of going to casting calls, etc. To save tens of dollars a month, he tried to make it to January without turning on his heat. A quote from his dad when he visited: "I was cold to my bones." Meanwhile, he could have saved hundreds a month by getting a roommate.
- My biggest money errors are due to my impulsiveness in the stock market...buying or selling a stock based on emotion instead of rationality. Thanks for that genetic defect, Dad. : ) Meanwhile, I'll spend forever agonizing over spending a little extra money on a nice shirt or trying to get a slightly cheaper flight.
