IMHO, the current problems are not cyclical, they are structural and systemic. The problems have NOT been fixed, just delayed and likely worsened. 

Here is a reading list of books I think are worth your time:

Thomas Sowell already covered the origins of human inequality, but Jared Diamond is still considered the "original thinker" because he's of European descent.
