Santander finally got its NYSE stock ticker changed from "STD" to "SAN".

Not a big deal, but really, a major multinational bank should not be an "STD".

The stock is up about 10% in the last week from my last buy in price at around 5.70.  Yay!  It is funny that the spanish stock market has been rallying even as bond yields have risen.

 CNN story.

So they went from-

STD- Sexually Transmitted Disease

SAN- Strong Acid Number (acronym used in the lubricant industry)

That makes perfect sense to me :)

They chose STD originally, because they had a subsidary that used the symbol SAN.

In Spain, they have been listed as SAN.

The subsidary agreed to change its symbol, so that STD could become SAN for their ADRs, just like the basic stock was already listed in other markets.

A short, history, signifying nothing.

Slightly off-topic, but a couple of my favorite tickers:

HOG - Harley-Davidson, Inc.

YUM - Yum Brands (KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell)

SAM - Boston Beer Company (Sam Adams Beer)

LOL.

Yes, it is about time.  STD is the most unfortunate ticker ever!

I still wouldn't buy it.  Santander is one of the best run banks in the world, but there's very little it can do to fix the eurozone.  I exited my small Santander position about a year ago, and it turned out to be a good decision.
