CAPS Champion of the World Contest: UPDATE

June 02, 2009 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: FUQI.DL , FXP

We're in uncharted territory this week, folks, as desertdreams has displaced IBDvalueinvestin in first place. The secret to desertdreams’ success? Accuracy…and bullish bets on China.

The skinny
desertdreams’ biggest winner to date has been a long on Fuqi International (FUQI), a Chinese maker and marketer of gold jewelry. The stock has rocketed recently, but I think that’s less of a play on China or the China consumer and more a play on the fact that Fuqi was selling for about the price of its cash plus its precious metals inventory. Indeed, given the dollar’s impending demise and the lack of an alternative safe currency in the world today, gold and other metals assets have been attracting a lot of the market’s attention. But metals assets aren’t the only things that will benefit…so will countries that export metals and the miners and mine suppliers (that’s a hint for you).

desertdreams is also short the UltraShort Xinhua 25 (FXP), which means it’s an effectively an ultra long. That’s some clever thinking about how to make multiple bets on one big thing, and that kind of clever thinking is what’s ultimately going to get YOU in the winner’s circle at year end.

Rounding out the top 5 are vitrified, dccoolhead, and AvBanksSS.
