CAPS Champion of the World Contest Q2 Winner

November 16, 2009 – Comments (3)

We're 6 months through the CAPS Champion of the World contest, which means we're ready to announce the second winner of a free 1-year Global Gains membership. Who is it? I reveal the name below, but first I wanted to update everyone on how the Global Gains team picks are faring (remember you need to rate at least one of these ideas each quarter in order to be eligible to win).

We've made 15 short picks thus far. Specifically, NTES, GRRF, BYDDY.PK, GFA, CNTF, FEED, CFSG, IMAX, LULU, FUQI, HMIN, CBAK, COGO, AUO, and NPSNY.PK. Of these 15 shorts, 8 have declined (which I think is impressive given the recent bull market). And while the median return is a nice -2.2%, the hefty rises in HMIN and NPSNY.PK have made these positions on average unprofitable. The average return from our shorts is +6.7%.

We have three longs: CLB, ISCHF.PK, and CHBT. All three are up, and the average return in 20.9%. Pretty good.

Our one arbitrage position is to short CYOU and long SOHU. It is +7% at this point.

All told
Thus far in the contest we have told you about 19 trades. 12 have been successful. The Global Gains team is quite please with that record, and we hope you wil continue to read our contest ideas.

And now the winner...
So who has won this quarter's free GG membership? It's desertdreams with a score of more than 2,600 points and near 80% accuracy. desertdreams also agreed with our thumbs down on GFA, which made him or her eligible for this quarter's prize.

desertdreams,  please email me ( to claim your prize.

And if you didn't win this time, there are two more chances to win this year, so keep reading the blog and rating the contest ideas.

Desertdreams , welcome to global gains.. Come to the Global Gains message board. You will see that posters on there have found majority of the big Chinese gainers before they took off.

Many of the desertdreams picks do not show up in the International Stocks tag and there are a ton ultra ETFs. Maybe this is not explicitly against the rules, but if someone red thumbed 192 ultras and used the remaining eight spots for the requisite International Stock picks, how does that make the CAPS community "smarter about global investing"?

While trying not to be a spoil sport, in the early set up of this boggled contest it was agreed that international ETF's would be allowed, but NOT US ones, such as TNA and FAZ.

There was some attempt to filter out the players who had mis-understood, but that fizzled as well.

Congrats to Desert, but I agree the game/goal and results are worthless.  If it couldn't be salvaged it should have been stared over. Also, I can't find any of the weekly recommendations of late from the team to pick from......guess they got lost in India.
