CAPS feature request: grouping picks by sectors / descriptions

June 09, 2009 – Comments (7)

When I look at my CAPS page  which currently has 75 picks, I have to remember what each company's ticker symbol stands for, remember what field each company is in, and remember why I picked the company originally.  With 75 or fewer picks, I can usually keep a good track of this, although occasionally I will see my CAPS page and think - why the heck did I choose THAT GUY?!?

I can't even imagine going to 200 picks (the CAPS limit) - which is almost necessary to be ranking enough companies that one's CAPS score could reach the upper echelon's of the board.  At that point, you need some system to keep track of all your picks, follow the companies / sectors, and plan out when you would remove / replace picks.  That's getting quite messy - and not for the casual CAPS user.

What would be very helpful would be a way to place a tag / tags on each of your picks and then group your CAPS picks not by the start date - but by descriptive tags that could outline how/why you have chosen these companies.

On my CAPS page I would have these sectors:

 - Steel

 - Cars

Drug Company

 - ETF

Credit Companies

House Builders

 - Computer

 - Internet

 - Solar

Having such a way of categorizing each of our CAPS pages would help not just to make each of us better investors - but also would communicate to other CAPS players what sectors you are most devoted and interested to - and clarify what your overall philosophy of CAPS investment is.

This is my proposal.  I'm happy that CAPS continues to develop, and the recent idea of putting in limit orders is a good step towards giving CAPS users more ability to control how they can make investment predictions.

Check out the Sectors tab (between Best / Worst and Blog) near the top of your page.

*blushes* - I feel a bit silly now, but thanks for pointing out that tab.  That does actually accommodate most of what I would hope to do.

About the only thing I would like would be the ability to write my own sectors or tags descriptions and group my picks accordingly to those.

We do have on our roadmap the ability to "tag" your stocks.  (no date yet though for this feature).

Kinda knew you would stumble into the new enhancements.

Jakes done a great job on these....Kudos man.

Incidentally is there a way to set a Limit Sell on existing picks?

I think I am seeing a preset Sell limit on the entry ( which to me really doesn't make sense - unless its a clear swing trade) - but can't figure it out for existing pick closure.

anchak, click on the "Limit Orders" tab on your Scorecard.  You should see all of your active picks picks listed.  You can also click on the "Start Limits" link to see limit orders that haven't been activated.

Click on the Edit button in the right-hand column to set a close limit for an active pick.

Hope this helps,

Thanks a ton!

Man I wish you guys had this in AEBF.OB heydays - LOL!

Incidentally, are you guys thinking of Statsgeeks suggestion on volume limit ?

Rog....Apologies for the sidebar...but this is almost a redundant blog now.

Anchak, we debate internally the volume limit proposal I think it has merit.  If we ever launch the "MicroCAPS" service a CAPS just for tiny caps, then I think the volume limit will be a no brainer.
