In what has become typical Democrat fashion, a group of Democrats has decided to stand on principle and defend their promise to provide a funded safety net for unemployed Americans, while also saying they have no chance to succeed.

Both Republicans and Democrats already failed on their promise to provide the identical safety net to the financial industry.

Conservative Republicans have the opportunity to stand on their principles and demand that budgets be balanced with a "no" vote.

Recently elected Tea Party representatives have the opportunity to stand on their principles and demand smaller Government and lower taxes with a "no" vote. 

Together these groups should be able to defeat the proposed combination of lower revenue and higher spending.

Together I will call these groups "Congress".

The following video is my expectations for "Congress" standing on their principles. Principles are represented in white.

I really don't understand why Obama and the Democrats do such a lousy job in office to present a unified coherent message to the population. They have no issues communicating during the elections in 2008, regarding what they wanted to do. Obama was considered a liberal and campaigned on stuff like revamping the health-care (more public) and getting out of the wars (which seems like a pretty liberal thing). 

Now he's compromising with Republicans on tax-cuts? Makes no sense to me.

Progressives have a strategic problem they need to figure out. Typically they make political headway during economic downturns and the conservatives make headway during economic upturns. But this downturn will end at some point and the personal balance sheet repair that is going on could easily lead to a 20 year upturn like we had in 1980-2000. And the progressives don't seem to be making much progress. Could this be a lost cycle for progressive interests, and what would that mean if we had another long expansion phase?

I will freely admit this is speculative parrotting however, I heard as a  senator he abstaned from voting.  As president he has done pretty much the same thing as he has appointed czars over every issue.

You want to cut government spending?  Start with the czars and their staffs.  Then let's reach back to the equivalents during the Bush days.  Still not enough, let's reach back further to say the last six administrations?  That ought to save a ton of "Federal Reserve Notes".

 The video reminded me of when I was kid and a group of us built this huge snow fort with all sorts of tunnels and whatnot.  That memory is still one of my favorite.

 I listened to Obama speak about why he caved in to the Republicans.  I was/am really upset that we are continuing the tax breaks which only benefit the rich.  I know that wealth of this country is getting increasingly unbalanced between the top 1% and the remaining 99% - and that is very unhealthy.  High progressive taxes and good social support are the only way to keep things from getting too skewed. 

 But, I listened to him speak about it.  Obama is not/never was the president of change (which is how he won an election).  He is the president of cool thinking and rationality.  I am actually upset about the tax breaks, and wish he just put up a fight without regard for consequences.  But, he's too damed rational.  Tax breaks for the rich for two years won't kill the country (the same tax breaks for eternity would), and keeping unemployment benefits now is really important.  Overall, the economy is recovering and we've just reached the transition point of unemployment stability -> job growth.    

 So far, Obama's not done anything causing drastic change.  We didn't just drop Iraq and Afghanistan, we didn't get universal health care, we didn't nationalize banks or hang them out to dry, we didn't kill GM, we're slowly(!) opening the military to openly homosexual people, etc.. Obama is the rational, cool, slow, patient governing style.

I am upset about the tax breaks.  I wish we would have gotten universal health care.  But, I appreciate that we have a cool, thoughtful leader making decisions.  I appreciate that he has reasoning behind decisions (that I may not always agree with), rather than just "They hate freedom" or "I am the decider".
