*For those of you who live under rocks, W.E. Cayote, a warner brothers cartoon character, had the unfortunate habit of stepping off of cliffs while chasing the Road Runner. Of course, it always took Mr. Cayote several seconds to realize that he was standing on air and he only began to fall once he looked down into the chasm below. This also seemd to afflict Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam and several other characters who habitually chased... You can draw your own parallels to that mataphor...
