China Watch: September Copper Imports

October 16, 2008 – Comments (7)

I find it interesting that the September graphic includes only refined copper stock... no finished products nor other categories... suggesting that this was a very conscious effort to re-stock national supply to some degree.

Please see full size image below... sorry!  :)

There's one piece to support the "re-upping" of China's inputs in anticipation of Demon call for China "flipping the switch". The increase does seem very close to the total sum of M,J,J,A shortages from the 100 tonne "average" Either they need the supply on hand at all times for reserve or production, or they were just waiting for a sale.

What would you consider the most important basic metal input for China? I would think Steel would be the better indicator. Once we see this happening with Steel, Demon's theory is taking shape.

Also, with only refined coming in, in that quantity what's happening? Will we see an increase in domestic (china) production of products, alloys and annodes (PAA)? Is production down and they don't need PAA? This piece alone makes me think China just wants to keep enough "reserves" to insulate from volatility

Thanks for the chart!

Bullish for PCU?  I consider PCU to be the best copper play out there (freeport mcmoran a close runner up, and actually yamana has a nice copper portfolio too with their purchase of northern orion from last year).

Sinchi, I'm seriously considering delving into a miner.  Gun to your head, which is the best to invest in right now?

With the dividend PCU is offering, waiting for it to come around wouldn't be the least bit painful.  It would buy itself in 5 years.  Outstanding P/E  and EPS.  I wish I bought it on the dip today, damn.

SLW or AUY (yes, even with recently reduced production guidance). For sure, stick with gold or silver if you're only going to do one miner!!

And... do you happen to have a link to a post with your very interesting theory about China 'flipping the switch'?

With a fresh look at the graphic, I see the September numbers simply were not divided into the categories that the historical data were. So they were not all refined copper as I suggested in my comments above. My mistake!  :)
