Coal Gasification

May 10, 2012 – Comments (4) | RELATED TICKERS: HNP , GE

Does anybody know anything about the prospects for coal gasification as a profitable investment.  I know that utilities in China are beginning to move into gasification and there are a few plants in the US that use this technology.  Are there any real commercial prospects for it?

Sasol, SSL, is a leader in this. They are based in South Africa and pay a nice dividend.

I would think that in the US the current low natural gas prices make coal gasification unprofitable. I haven't done the math, but even with the current low coal prices, it would surprise me if it is profitable in the US.

China is a different story. The country needs to import a significant part of its energy. Coal is a lot easier to transport across the ocean than natural gas, so gasification may make economical sense in China.
