An old saying in investing is that the trend is your friend.  This is data I collected for those who look for stocks that are setting 52 week highs.

While Friday was a very tough day in the market we did see 188 instances of 25 stocks hitting 52 week highs.

During the first 30 minutes there were 60 instances of 52 week highs.  The 10:00 hour saw 95 instances.  The 11:00 hour saw 19 instances.  The noon hour saw 2 instances.  The 1:00 hour saw 3 instances.  The 2:00 hour saw 2 instances.  The final hour saw 7 instances.

The stock that saw the most number of new highs was Quest Software, Inc ( QSFT ) which saw 36 new highs, being at $20.60 up $0.58 or 2.9% at 12:51.  It then reversed course and ended the day at $19.89 down $0.13 or -0.65% with 3,302,662 shares traded.

The stock that saw the biggest % change was RCM Technologies, Inc ( RCMT ) which was at $5.01 up $1.51 or 43.14% at 3:59.  It ended the day at $4.93 up $1.43 or 40.86% with 658,265 shares traded.

On Friday there were three stocks under $2.00 a share that set 52 week highs.  They were ( in order of lowest price hit ): ABTL, TIII and ARWR.  Autobytel Inc ( ABTL ) hit a high of $1.42 up $0.23 or 19.33% at 11:33.  It then reversed course and ended the day at $1.17 down $0.03 or -2.5% with 2,029,491 shares traded.  TII network Technologies Inc ( TIII ) hit a high of $1.70 up 0.04 or 2.41% at 9:57.  It also reversed course and ended the day at $1.55 down $0.11 or -6.63% with 107,795 shares traded. Arrowhead Research Corporation ( ARWR ) hit a high of $1.85 up $0.16 or 9.47% at market close with 1,570,241 shares traded. 

There were no stocks between $2.00 and $5.00 a share that set 52 week highs.

Two stocks selling between $5.00 and $10.00 set 52 week highs on Friday.  They were ( in order of lowest price hit ): RCMT and MEDW.  Of these two, RCM set the most number of highs, 17.  Since it saw the best daily percentage increase of all stocks, it was described earlier.  Mediware Information Systems Inc ( MEDW ) set a new high of $9.99 up $0.83 or 9.06% on the market open.  The rest of the day it drifted lower and ended the day at $9.33 up $0.17 or 1.85% with 14,294 shares traded.

Twelve stocks selling between $10.00 and $25.00 hit 52 week highs on Friday.  They were ( in order of lowest price hit ): ALIM, MFT, BRID, NNJ, NXZ, DVOX, PANL, BSL, BHV, QSFT, JZK and DKK.  The stock setting the most new highs was Quest Software, Inc ( QSFT ) which was described earlier.  The stock that had the biggest dollar and percentage increase was Lehman ABS Corporation ( JZK ).  It hit a high of $22.00 up $1.19 or 5.72% at 3:58.  When the market closed two minutes later, the price had dropped to $20.72 up $0.22 or 1.07%.  At market close, the stock in this group that had performed the best was Bridgford Foods Corporation ( BRID ) which ended the day at its 52 week high of $14.60 up $0.67 or 4.81% with 5,650 shares traded.  Five of the stocks in this group got caught up in the market downturn and after setting 52 week highs ended the day actually losing share price.  These five were ALIM, PANL, BSL, BHV and QSFT.  The biggest loser was Alimera Sciences Inc ( ALIM ) which ended the day at $9.61 down $1.29 or -11.83% with 162,519 shares traded.

Five stocks selling between $25.00 and $50.00 a share that hit 52 week highs on Friday.  They were ( in order of lowest price hit ):  KVN/CL, SJT, EPB, SXE and SM.  Of these, the stock setting the most highs was San Juan Basin Royalty Trust which hit its 17th high of $25.99 up $0.48 or 1.88% at 10:28.  During the rest of the day it gave up all gains and ended the day at $25.04 down $0.47 or -1.84% with 542,965 shares traded.  This stock does pay a monthly dividend of about $0.20 for a yearly dividend of $2.430636 which equates to 9.70% yield at the current price.  SM Energy Company ( SM ) saw the biggest percentage increase during the day.  It hit $47.00 up $0.87 or 1.89% at 10:38.  By the end of the day it too had given up its gains and ended the day at $43.87 down $2.26 or -4.89% with 1,211,643 shares traded.  El Paso Pipeline Partners L.P. ( EPB ) also ended the day lower after setting a new high.  After hitting $29.38 up $0.24 or 0.82% at 10:28, it reversed course and ended the day at $29.09 down $0.05 or -0.17% with 359,974 shares traded.  This stock pays a yearly dividend of $1.52 or 5.22% on a quarterly basis.  KVN/CL and SXE did both close the day higher.  Structured Products Corporation ( KVN/CL ) ended the day at $25.86 up $0.04 or 0.15% with 8,356 shares traded.  This stock pays an annual dividend of $1.875 on a semi-annual basis which equates to a 7.25% yield.  Stanley Inc ( SXE ) also ended the day higher at $37.17 up $0.02 or 0.05% with 234,412 shares traded. 

Three stocks selling between $50.00 and $100.00 a share that hit 52 week highs on Friday.  They were ( in order of lowest price hit ):  VMW, XEC and CRM.  Salesforce.com Inc ( CRM ) set 23 new highs, getting up to $96.35 up $1.15 or 1.21% but then turning around and ending the day at $89.64 down $5.56 or -5.84% with 6,455,478 shares traded.  Cimarex Energy Company ( XEC ) hit a high of $79.23 up $1.90 or 2.46% at 10:22 and then reversed course and ended the day at $74.35 down $2.98 or -3.85% with 2,393,537 shares traded.  VMWare Inc ( VMW ) also closed down after setting a new high.  It hit a high of $71.38 up $0.67 or 0.95% at 10:42 and then ended the day at $68.29 down $2.42 or -3.42% with 4,567,641 shares traded.

No stocks that sell for over $100.00 a share that set 52 week highs on Friday.

For the week there were 155 stocks that set 52 week highs but none that set a new high every day.
