David from Oregon

March 20, 2013 – Comments (12)

I think this is a scam and I am curious as to whether anyone else has heard from "David from Oregon."

I got a phone call in which the caller said that he was David from Oregon and he had seen my picture and telephone number on the web.  I looked like someone who was interested in my health and he wanted to share with me information and a video on ABC,com ( that had helped him.  We could talk more later.  With that the phone call ended.  I never said a word.  At least not until the end, but by that time the caller was gone.  It sounded like a real person, but I lean toward a recording because the spiel was so smooth.  The only thing that was "personalized" was that he started with "Hello, Mary"

I am wondering if anyone else has gotten a call like this.  There are several red flags in the message that concern me.  First, my telephone number is not on the web - anywhere - unless you know my real and full name and then hunt for it.  Second, the only picture of me that has ever been posted was in GoodVibe's CIL (sort of a Motley Fool chatroom back in 2010) and GoodVibe removed everything that was associated with him shortly after he left Motley Fool.  Besides that was a 40 year old wedding photo (yes, I have been married that long and to the most wonderful man in the world!)  Also, in real life, I am not Mary.  That is the name that telemarketers and business people use.  It is a way of weeding out people who know me from those who are trying to act like they know me.

I realize that I should have immediately spoken up, but I am in a state of shock at the moment.  I have just lost a family member that was very, very dear to me in a motorcycle accident and I am reacting to everything a bit slowly at the moment.  Otherwise I would know if this was a recording or a person.

I suspect that this is a scam and that this was a 'set-up' call.  Most people probably have their contact info and pictures out there somewhere - either on Facebook, Linkedin, or some other social media.  I just happen to be a throwback who doesn't want to put that stuff up.  I doubt that anyone, even here, even remembers that one picture that was up for such a short time.

Have you heard from Dave or David from Oregon?  What is his next step?  If it is a scam, he has called the wrong person at the wrong time.

If you have his phone number or the number he dialed from, you can google it and find out if others have gotten a call from the same number. You can probably google David from Oregon and see if you can find anything that way too.

 Good Luck

Mary, I get calls all of the time, and we are on the do not call list.

I usually just hang up on them, then using the caller ID on my TV I call the number back.

Almost every time I get a recording that says it is not a valid number.

Sometimes they ask for me by name, sometimes they just go into their pitch.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Hope you are well and the markets have been good to you.

Have a great day.

Wow, I would of never of guessed, thats a pretty clever idea Mary. How can I go by just being known as Harry? Right now if I get a number on caller ID that I don't recognize I just let the answering machine get it and they usually hang up.

My first thought when you said David in Oregon called was did David in Quatar move again:) I would definately take that call, but wouldn't worry about the obvious wannabe David in Oregon's sales pitches.

So sorry to hear about your cousin. My condolences.

Should read-

How can I go to just being known as Harry, for telemarketers and salespeople?

Harry, it would only work if there are a lot of variants of the name in the same family (oddly enough, the one I married into) and my name starts with the same initial.  The fun part - NONE of us are actually Mary, but we all list the name on anything that is not a legally binding document.  Works like a charm!

Thank you.  That is the first thing that has actually helped. This is the first person that has been ripped from me much too early and in senseless violence.  I was unprepared for the rage.

Music speaks to me, but I could not find the song I needed.  Thank you for giving me the music when I could not find it on my own.  It has quenched the fury - some - enough.

When telemarketers call, being able to burp on demand is a skill, if you know what I mean.

Thank you again Lordz.  I am not made for anger.  It did not last long.  I was raised with too much love.  The child that killed my dear cousin will live with that for his entire life.  A terrible thing.  Nothing that happens to him can bring my friend back to me.  I was stunned to find that thousands came to say good bye to my beloved cousin.  I knew he was a bright and joyous man, but never realized how many lives he touched.  I will see him in Heaven but oh how I wish he had stayed long enough to hold his grandchildren.

Thank you so for your wonderful music.  If you know me at all, you know that nothing touches my soul quite so much as the right words set to the right music.  Bless you for knowing how to help...Mary Ann

Mary  I   am  happy that  you  seem  much  better.

From  what I  know  about  riding,  your  cousin   died  doing what he  loved  in  the  freedom of  riding and  the open  road.

I  have much to  say,  but   I'll simply  not say  it  and  present you with another  work  of  art.

Sometimes to see the good you need to see the bad,
sometimes to be happy you need to once been sad.
There would be no rainbow if it wasn't for the rain,
and no appreciation for life if there wasn't any pain.

If today was hard then tomorrow look up high,
and you'll see a rainbow form up in the sky.
If you're at wits end, and the end of your rope,
remember that the rainbow represents more than hope.

It represents a journey that is finally said and done,
and the storm for which you have bravely overcome.
Don't be ashamed, sometimes we all want to cry
tears are a necessary thing to the weary eye.

The soul would have no rainbow if the eye had no tears,
so don't be afraid to stand tall and face your fears.
Don't give in to the sorrow, tomorrow is a better day,
that's when the rainbow, finally comes your way.

One thing I learned in life, things will get better,
no matter what the storm, no matter the weather.
Sad times never last, they always fade away,
and before you know it things will seem okay.

Don't give up hope, don't lose faith,
God is on high erect and God is great.
When the flood gates open and the rain starts to pour,
God's on your side, so you're sure to endure.

He can make the storm seem like just a drizzle,
and make any problem seem like it is little.
I have faced death, but yet I stand strong,
for God was on my side all along.

Thank  you  for  your  blessings.

Only  thru  God   can  someone  so broken  as  myself,   find  the words  and  music  to  help out another.

Hi Mary,

I got a scam phone call not too long ago, but it wasn't from "David in Oregon".  Some guy called me saying that I had expressed interest in a job on some website the week prior.  I at first said "I don't remember expressing interest in a job on any website".  He insisted he got my name from some website.  When I asked him what website he wouldn't tell me.  He then proceeded to ask me some general questions (am I over 18, US citizen).  After the second question, I asked him what website he was calling from again.  He stil avoided the question and said I expressed interest in a job.  Then I told him that theres no way I did because I self employed.  Then he abruptly ended the call...
