Hello fellow Fools.

Today I come to you with this exciting opportunity of possiby winning a meaningless contest.

THE RULES-

Pick a stock, any stock.

Your start price will be recorded as soon as I see it with a $1,000 purchase price.

Entries must be made by New Years day. (but you'll soon see that the quicker your in it the more likely to win it)

After your pick is made your cost basis will be lowered for every dividend received. I'll also adjust for splits.

Contest ends on 8/17/13 (I'm trying to reward long term investment) (and why would you want to give your gains away at a 35% tax rate anyway)

The person whos stock value exceeds the cost basis by the most wins (kinda like real life..eh)

THE PRIZE-

I will plant five fiat based currency notes in the hands of the homeless dude I see on my way to work everyday, or if the winner prefers I'll drop it in a Salvation Army kettle.

Lets see who wins the tortise and the hare debate.

Banco Santander (SAN)

A bank in Spain takes care of the high risk side (even tho' most of the business is outside of Spain). Strong dividend and decent valuation take care of the reward side.

BTW, if you want to simplify your book keeping, set up a CAPS player and enter the picks. CAPS takes care of adjusting the cost basis for dividends. Under your rules, the winner would be the pick with the highest Stock Gain, not the highest Score.

Mega I left the denomination blank on purpose, I think I could hadle 5 2$ bills, but as always casara sara the futures not ours to see.

Very interesting contest. I don't know enough about any stocks to pick except for one of the 3 dozen or so positions I hold and I likely don't know enough about them either. And many of them simply are not depressed enough in price to be candidates anymore even though they were depressed before. I pondered both BP and LO which seem to still be depressed. But my final pick is SAN (Banco Santander) a Spanish bank. Hysteria seems to be keeping its price down despite good fundamentals. But who knows, like all banks it could be killed by hysteria. But nothing else in my portfolio seems to be potentially high flier enough to be a candidate.

Disclosure--I have positions in both SAN and BP. I don't know much about the companies I have positions in. I know nothing about other companies.

What will be wildy ironic will be if AAPL ends up being the winner. While I have always though AAPL was good and I have a small position in it, I never had the courage to take a big position in it. Too bad.

I'll run with Chimera Investment (NYSE: CIM)

It's a complete risk as Chimera only recently restated four years worth of results, but I felt the not-knowing part of the investigation was worse than actual $695 million in restatements. Chimera is keeping their $0.09 quarterly payout through the remainder of 2012 for an annualized yield of 15%. Assuming non-agency MBS' don't implode, it could head a lot higher.

Only picking this because it's a contest with no money involved.

BUT once you receive a dividend you have NO way of knowing what your starting cost basis was here on CAPS unless you want to calculate it backwards to see where you started. If there are four quarterly dividends in your pick your start price will go down each quarter, but where you started from will be "lost".

I like, (when I remember) to put my original start price in the comment field of stocks with high dividends to see how they "participated" in my CAPS score for that equity.

Apparently I am misinterpreting what the goal is:

You've got it right. The cost basis adjusts downward with dividends as if they were reinvested. Under HCG's rules, the winner will be the pick with the biggest Stock Gain, not the highest Score.
