Dollar Tree raises 4Q and full-year guidance

Dollar Tree expects 4th-qtr and full-year earnings in the top half of previous guidance range Thursday February 5, 2009, 10:50 am EST

NEW YORK (AP) -- Discount-store operator Dollar Tree Inc. raised expectations for its fourth-quarter and full-year results after the discount-store operator reported that its same-store sales rose 2.2 percent during the quarter.

Dollar Tree now expects fourth-quarter and full-year earnings within the top half of the company's prior guidance for each period.

The company previously predicted quarterly earnings of $1.07 to $1.15 per share and full-year profit of $2.45 to $2.53 per share.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters forecast earnings of $1.14 per share for the fourth quarter and $2.52 for the year.

Same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least a year, are a key indicator of retailer performance because they measure growth at existing stores rather than newly opened ones.

Dollar Tree will release its financial results on Feb. 25.

Dollar Tree shares fell $6.07, or 15 percent, to $35.68 in morning trading. The stock has traded between $24.37 and $44.32 during the past 52 weeks.
