In Star Trek the BORG is a powerful species that assimilates technology and organisms. Through out Hewlett-Packard history by eliminating risky costly R&D (reasearch and developement) and going safe cost efficient route by acquiring software and hardware companies thus owning patents. Also Hewlett-Packard cut costs by purchasing massive volumes of hardware components (at massive discount prices), mass assembling computers, REBRANDING or REBADGING mass volume purchased electronics and etc.
The flaw with this bussiness concept:
1) if HP acquires LEMONS they must commit massive layoffs(dissolve poor acquisitions at a lost or surgically remove dead flesh) and possibly acquire again (millions and billons of dollars lost and again spent)
2) compatiblity issues with:
a) hardware to hardware
b) software to software
c) hardware to software
d) software to hardware
e) combination of and all of the above
3) outsourced TECH-SUPPORT
Finally, its a fact that Hewlett-Packard knows how to raise money, cut costs, and acquire.
