Earning manipulations?

Financial Armageddon has linked to a post that shows the difference between operating and as reported earnings.

The difference in these two has skyrocketed.  All the time when I am reading reports and I look at what companies present as "truth" and what's changing the figures from being realistic I just don't get it as to why it is allowed.  A company that is losing money hands over fists can be made to look like it is earning money with a tax adjustment asset or other manipulations and the degree to which the company is in trouble is hidden unless you spend hours looking.

Look at the graphs in the link.
