Emmigration from Britain

October 19, 2008 – Comments (1)

Financial Armageddon has a post about the problems in Britain.  Something that caught my attention in it is the number of foreign workers leaving.

The falling pound is a disaster for foreign workers, and the employment sectors that Britain is having problems filling.  When I went to teach there the pound was about 2.30 and dropped to about 2.00 by the time I left 4 months later.  I needed a fair bit of cash up front and then it declined by about 15% by the time I left.  That was huge unexpected pay cut.

Australian workers are facing a change from 2.50 to 1.80.  That's about a 30% pay cut.

heard a report on NPR friday that the Spanish goverment is offering to pay "guest workers" (aka foreigners) 2 years worth of public assistance in a lump sum to agree to go to their home countries for 3 years. about 300,000 folks are targeted and this is a very popular move given double digit unemployment.

is it a non sequiter to wonder what Salvidor Dali would have made out of all of this?
