EPA releases MPG equivalent value for Nissan Leaf

The window sticker will state 99 MPG Equivalent.  This is based on 33.7 KWH being equal to one gallon of gasoline.  While Nissan reported a range of around 100 miles per full charge, the aggressive driving style of most Americans will likely give it a driving range closer to 75 miles per full charge.  Charging takes 7 hours.

So this car isn't exactly convenient - at least not as convenient as what was originally projected.  7 hours is an incredibly long charge time especially for a range that is now projected to be 25% less than what Nissan originally suggested.  While I commend their efforts, I'll personally be waiting until the next generation of electric cars is introduced.

Also in the news, Houston develops their charging station network.

It's a perfect commuter car though. (Where most gas gets wasted) Most people don't have more than a 30 mile commute.

I was just about to argue that for $32,000 its not a great commuter car.  But between the huge tax credit that the government is shelling out, and the potential savings from using electricity over gas - yeah, its a great commuter car.

I just watched A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash (Hubbert was an incredibly smart dude).  It really makes you want to try to cut back on fossil fuel use.  I ditched my car about 3 months ago and started walking and taking public transportation everywhere.

+1 This is why we need to start talking dollars per mile (or some other metric that applies to all vehicles, regardless of fuel source), instead of miles per gallon.

@sansbeanie, is that the scariest documentary ever? Have you checked out (and fully read) the Life after The Oil Crash website, what should be a must read for everyone?  Peak Oil is a big reason why my long term outlook on the economy isn't so good.

How much is the tax credit?  My next car needs to be electric, but I think I'll wait a few years, too, to get improvements.
